have you made your solar filter yet ?


if you have what material did you wind up using ?

heh funny you should ask at this moment.. I just finished constructing the cell to hold the baader filter material.

The solar film should hopefully arrive tomorrow or tuesday.. my cell is ready, so it should only take 5 minutes to complete the construction and then it'll be ready to use.

Just in time too, i'm wanting to go to my son's preschool later this week to give them a daytime sun and moon session, and I need the moon and sun both together in the sky, far enough apart , and a good time is either later this coming week or early next week, otherwise it'll be later in december, around the 19th.

I would've liked a glass filter, but for $230 full aperture it just wasn't worth it.. For $55 worth of solar film (30cm x 30cm) and $0 in cardboard, it's a much more economical way to do some solar observing.

Here's my cell, just finished making it 2 minutes ago.

you will enjoy observing the sun (as long as you dont forget the safety that has to go with it )


i do, ive seen some great sunspots ive seen them appear and disappear very cool (joke)

yeh i'm looking forward to it! Although the 10" tube gets very hot in the direct sunlight!

I've looked through a PST once, man that was awesome! I'd love a H-a scope, but at $1000 it's a little further in the future

thats more or less why ive given up on observing the sun at my place its getting rather to hot during the day and also early in the morning

the problem ive got is the refractor ive got isnt that great for eye relief at the ep

after a bit of (usually i try to got for an hour ) staring at the the ol bright sun it starts to give me a head ache i found winter days better
