Question Question: aluminium off cuts or casts

Does anyone know where to obtain relatively larger chunks of aluminium, for machining?

I need couple of pieces (short rods), about ~ø60 x 20 mm (for large and thick spacers).
Melted and cast pieces about this size are also perfectly OK.

Sometimes ATC has suitable off cuts in the bin for sale, but not at the moment..
Thanks in advance for any input :-)

If you look on Bangood, Ebay, Vevor ect you can find very cheap electric and propane furnaces with all the needed accessories to melt and cast your own. The small 3kg electric furnaces do a great job for the price.

I recently bought a 4kg rod of 80 diameter and I think there were some pieces around 60 diameter in the same container, but not short ones: Highett Metal recyclers in Braeside. About $10/kg.

Sohttps://www.ebay.com.au/str/red5metalworx/101-60mm/_i.html?store_cat=62731156013 Some Ebay sellers have Alum bar of varying diameters. Try red.5.metalworx, have bought from them a few times, for my aluminium needs.

Hi Bojan,

I second Stefan's suggestion of

Highett Metal
283-295 Boundary Rd
Mordialloc VIC 3195, Australia .

I have been there on a couple of occassions and they have some shelves up front outside the office area with a selection of salvaged copper, brass and aluminium offcuts suitable for machining (round and hex).

Good luck in the hunt.

Best
JA

Hi Bojan,

I know you said you wanted Aluminium, but what about plastic materials? I have some I could give you that might suit your sizes 15? and ~25mm thick and that you could cut to round discs of the sort you want with a 60-70mm hole-saw.

The 15mm thick material is VERY dense black solid 15 x 65 x 220. I have a few pieces of that.

Best
JA

Hi JA,

thank you for the offer:-)

Actually, I solved the problem, I found a flat bar in my shed (probably from ATC), and I changed the design somewhat (with additional sleeve) so thinner block (10 mm plate/flat bar actually) can be used.
You are probably talking about delrin, I also have a few pieces of good size (they came from work, some test jigs we decommissioned long time ago, and of course, I didn't allow that to be thrown into bin ) .

Thanks again,
Bojan
