help

i just got a nexstar 8i today. i am totally clueless and i dont know why i can't see anything through the scope...i tried pointing at a star and i can't see anything. am i doing anything wrong?, i am using a low power eyepiece should i be able to see a light post nearby? all i can see is blurry light.

ah, it needs to be focused. There'll be a knob or two near the eyepiece that rack it in or out. Try turning that from end to end until the light post becomes crisp and clear.

Then try a star

But don't expect a star to look special. You need to find a planet, the moon or a deep-space object

i tried that but the light post just got brighter...does that mean that i am focused? all i can see is pure bright light. i want try to look at the moon but a tree is blocking it. : (

The moon is a good one to try to focus on. Use an eyepiece that is in the 25 to 35 mm range and try to focus with that first. If you use a short eyepiece (5, 7, 10 mm etc) it will be more difficult if you are not used to focusing.
