What type of scope?

Hi, I hope I am in the right place to ask this question.....sorry if i'm not but here goes. I live south of Perth in western Australia and I would like to buy a newer, bigger and better scope then what I already have. i have a 60mm refractor, which is great for planets etc but I would really love to get into some deep sky viewing and I can't do that with the refractor. i will have around $1000 to spend and i am hoping for some advice on what i should get and the cost and where from. There is a duty free shop in my town with a few skywatcher scopes that look great of course but I am not sure what to go for. i just want the best value for money etc. Can any body help with any info before i go and spend my hard earned money on a lemon....please?
thanks Jo
p.s I don't mind having one shipped form interstate. It dosen't seem like there is a lot of choice over here in the west which is very annoying as well.
