Modded DSLR
My Canon 350D is experiencing some difficulties and I'm considering purchasing a modded camera as a replacement.
Apart from Hutech in the States, is there any other supplier? I am heading out west in about a week and a half and to have no camera for astrophotography when I've driven so far for that purpose woudl be a real bummer.
Any suggestions??
Pete

Try this guy Pete. Just get yourself another 350d or 400d and send it to him. Hes usually very busy so there might be a delay but his prices are good. give him a buzz on the phone as he is based in Melbourne.

Hi Pete,
I've sent David two emails for the last three weeks asking for my 400D camera modification but haven't received any reply from him.
If you are going to buy 400D I guess it's better to ask him first whether he can modify this model or not. Currently it isn't on his list for modification.
Has anyone heard from David recently? I've almost given up of hope to reach him and going to buy already modified camera on astromart.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't get any reply today and I'm a bit concerned as I head West (where it is dark!) in a week and a half so there's not much time to waste.
Sadly, there's no phone number on the site to checkup in person.
I also followed up HOughy's suggestion in Korea but there's a 5 week turnaround for a cooled modified Canon.
Now if someone wanted to offload their existing camera....I am sure I could help them out.

I would love to help, but I cannot give u my little beastie? question - is there power where you are going or just a battery source? You could rent her for a short while - you would have to pick up though No wont tease you much. Rent is a very negotiable item - say 3 naglers a day you left your run far too late - these items are not best run into blindly after several hours, minutes and days you need to have come to a conclusion - I should have bought this 3 months ago . Do yourself a favour, use your 350D you will get good results, unless you are manually guiding or autoguiding for long periods of time you wont get the benefit of the modded cameras (cooled ones as well).

Heres his full contact details....
Khromagery Postal address: PO Box 3800 Middle Camberwell, Vic 3124 AUSTRALIA Email: david@khromagery.com.au Phone: +61 (0)411 471 634 Fax: +61 (0)3 9898 6291
You won`t get your camera modded within a week or two, more like a month or two...
Now Houghy`s cool camera would be just the best to have get done..
I would love to have this done on my camera!! .
Why not get a canon 40D. The two reviews show that it is a nice astro camera and I have heard it is slightly better at the red end than the older models....Theres a review at Astromart with a nice M8-M20 widfield taken with a 300mm lense..very nice...
cheers

Now you are really making it tough!
Problem is that I got all up close and personal with the sensor - used one of the compressed air cans and now find blotches all over it.
So I head out west - all the way to Gulargambone - and the trusty 350D is not so trusty. Do I take it to Canon? Won't get fixed in time. Do I buy a modded camera, now that I have an excuse? mmmm, its very tempting

All this talk about the new 40D has led me to this question:
What is a better proposition - a modified 40D (Hutech or similiar) or a cooled 400D (like the one hOughy and others rave about)?
What do the gurus think?

I`m no guru Pete but it would be real hard to beat what Houghy has!!
Only a QYH8 would be better. If I had the $$$ I would get one!!
http://web.aanet.com.au/gama/index.html
Even a plain modded 300D - 350D,400D would be preferable to a unmodded 40D.
Thats my opinon anyway.
Cheers

Thanks guys
So now I try and nurse the dodgy 350D through this trip - and then use the photos as an excuse to buy myself a christmas present.
Simple
