Well I just stepped out of the shed after starting at 7.00 this morning what an effort!
All joints were dowled and glued and the edges were routed flush. After a good sanding I fitted the ServoCat in it's new home and drilled the central pivot hole for the powered ground board.
I still have to make a couple of holes but the rocker box is nearly ready for staining.
How did you go about matching the dowl holes on two surfaces?

There are little metal inserts that fit in the holes with a central spike, all you have to do is press them up against the other side and the holes are marked out ready for drilling.

Can you buy these from a hardware store? just never heard of or seen them
before, but then again I've never looked for them.
I stained the box and cut a ring out of 2mm stainless to be screwed under it. This is what the bearings will ride on. I also started working on the part that holds the bearings for the alt.
I fitted the rocker box to the ground board after I was finished and I put a few weights inside it to see how it went.
Can I ask how you cut the 2mm Stainless? last time I tried cutting stainless I went through a few bits. Was there a special tungsten blade or something you used?
I got out in the shed to do a bit more this weekend.
I started on the ply, marking out and cutting the necessary pieces for the mirror box and rocker box out of hoop pine. I then proceeded to laminate two pieces of 15mm ply together for the bottom of the rocker box.
I also made a press to press the large pieces of ply together.
I leave it over night Rob but if you read the back of the glue bottle it says that for hard woods clamping pressure should be applied for 1 hour and soft woods for half an hour.
It will reach full strength in 24 hours.

I've had what will be my side bearings clamped and laminating since Tuesday lol...
only because I put a very liberal amount of wood glue between them.
Yeah I see what the bottle says but I thought that was more for smaller
joins and such.

Yes Rob all the bearings will be individually braked.

I was wondering how you will brake the bearings? I intend to use bearings for the scope I am building.
I was planning on using a clamp arrangement, mounted on the rocker box, that would apply friction directly onto the edges of the side bearings. I think it should work OK but it will look a bit clunky.

I don't know if you ever seen inside a fishing reel before but it will be the same as the system on the spool which incorporates a series of washers which are tightened in order for the spool to slow down.
Gee thats gorgeous, a work of art. Its lucky it will be used at night, otherwise we would spend as much time looking AT the telescope then looking THROUGH it
Will definately have to hold a big ceremony for First Light.
EDIT: I forgot to ask, do you get such a beautiful finish by putting on multiple coats and fine sanding between coats?
