What other ways are there to remote control Canon XXD other than the TC-80N3?
Just out of curiosity is there some way that a Canon xxD can be remotely operated other than by using the TC-80N3?
Also what focus programs will operate with them, eg DSLR Focus, Images Plus, AA4, Maxim DL, etc?

I bought a clone out of China for $40 off Ebay which I've found every bit as good as the Canon original.
The same company sells the RS-80N3 for about $10 plus they sell wireless remote shutter units for under $20.
The companies name is link-delight-oz

Thanks for the link Steve, but what I'm really after is a way to control the camera from the laptop via software rather than by the remote. If all else fails then I have the remote to fall back on.

Oh sorry, I missunderstood.
In that case I am not sure. I have the 40D and I've only browsed the software lightly so not even sure what it's capable of yet

While I like the idea of the remote time for it's portability, but when setup at home I'd like to be able to rationalize some of the wires and control as much as I can by a lap top.
Not meaning that I'm looking to buy one atm, a Canon xxD that is.

Ok, found out that DSLR Focus will do all the nitty gritty stuff. Now the next question.
Where can I get a Serial camera cable for shutter release???

hi Paul
The canon's ship with software called EOS utility.
This allows for camera control from a laptop via the usb cable. There are wireless capabilities as well for the canon at extra cost of course.
There are some limitations to the software when using live view or when mirror lock up is enabled but this only impacts on multiple interval exposures.
There are 2 versions of EOS utility for the different brands of camera.
The software works very well but I find i am more comfortable with the tc80n as I do not have an electric focusser so I am mostly at the scope using the tc80 and then downloading to laptop later. This also helps prevent laptop problems as the laptop is not being exposed to dew.
Perhaps when I have an observing shed then I will control everything from the laptop because i wont have to cart the extra stuff around and the laptop will be in close proximity to the scope and camera

The software utility allows for bulb exposures though the USB and not cable release? This is good. If so is this feature available for, say a 20D or only the later 30 and 40D and can secondary programs control the camera in the same way?

DSLR focus is no longer supported by Chris Venter I gather so you wont be seeing any upgrades for Vista etc
there is Maxim DSLR of course at the top end and Nebulosity which at $45 is a good buy
there is one other DSLR software whose name eludes me just for the moment-blame it on advancing age

When you refer to cable release I think of the mechanical plunger affair you screw into the shutter control button. The canon only has electronic control
Using the tc80 ypu can do bulb interval exposures of any duration up to 99 hours. There are other mods one can do for the earlier canons to enable shutter control. See attached pdf. There is another which i will compress and post as it exceeds size limit as pdf

I'm still a bit old school as I still call it by the name I first learnt but yes that is what I meant.
Thanks for the info Narayan. I won't be upgrading to Vista anytime soon. I'd still be using 98 if I had my way hell what was wrong with 3.X
I've just downloaded Nebulosity today so I'll have a look at that, and I seem to remember downloading the DSLR Focus upgrades last year that contained the 20D upgrades. I'm pretty sure ImagesPlus may work it as well. (man getting old affects the memory somethin' chronic some nights. )

ImagesPlus is what I use. I love it.
But I wished I had a remote TCN thingy at SPSP for the other camera.

Thanks for the pdf Steve, I'll send it off to someone that won't solder his fingers to the plug like I would

Check the last page of Computerized Shutter Control of Canon DSLRs.pdf for a list of software that will do the job

I wonder if the batteries are the same between the 20D and the 300D. It would be handy if they were.
Thanks Steve.
Well, I'm convinced

Thanks h0ughy, thats the same guy Steve (MT) linked to above. What I really want is the adapter to go from a 300D plug to 20D plug. Mind you if I get one of those I and take the PDF Steve (skwinty) posted and my 300D serial cable to a semi competent tech I'm sure something could be made up.
I'll especially need it now seeing as I'm a soon to be modded 20D owner. ( Thanks Leon. Sorry Eric ))

Yes Paul, they are the same.
It's a nice bonus to have the same batteries for your camera bodies.
