Supernova 2024ggi

Folks,

Just a quick shot from last night, much thanks to @mental4astro for the heads-up!

There are a triangle of "bright" stars towards the southern end of the galaxy extension, the red/orange one (TYC 7206-0545-1, mag 10.7) at the tip, SAO 202300 below and to the right slightly (mag 10.3), and the fainter mag 12.7 star above and to the right a bit further. The supernova is nestled in there closer to the top two. Quite obvious in relatively short exposures (less than a minute) from the suburbs.

That’s really cool Dunk. I’m currently collecting data on ngc3621 and have a few hours on Wednesday night / Thursday morning that doesn’t show the SN yet. Do you know when it is supposed to have first been detected?

The colour of the SN is quite a strong blue.

I took a 10 min image of 3621 tonight with a Seestar.
The SN is next to the two bright stars on the right side of the galaxy.
I estimate it to be mag 12, it is next to a mag 12.4 star.

Found out about this while I was out of the country and managed a capture on Friday. 52x60s minutes on a 72ED in Bortle 7.


This is my 2nd SN (first was 2023rve) and 2024ggi is much easier to positively ID!
