Plane photobombed Jupiter observing session

I had just set up on Sunday night, and began recording video of Jupiter when I saw the planet disappear from the screen for a split second, and then the seeing became incredibly poor- like watching through boiling water. When I ran my videos through DeTeCt, the program flagged up an event- and then I discovered the cause: a plane had flown right over (under?) the planet. I've never seen that in nearly four decades of Jupiter watching. There also appears to be a shock wave, visible as a straight line passing over Jupiter a few seconds after the plane. The video is here, 24 seconds of it, played back at roughly 1/3 speed. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/thUKXRNHLRs

Never seen that one before! Talk about lucky (maybe unlucky) imaging

Thanks Clare & Peter - and it certainly was remarkable! Glad it's not more frequent because even Autostakkert can only do so much when the seeing is that bad :-)

I was definitely more dismayed by the seeing than impressed by the alignment when it happened

I know what you mean. I’ve never captured it on camera but once through the eyepiece a plane flew right through. Almost had a heart attack

I suspect my luck has already run out. It's been cloudy/raining every night since.

I'd imaging it's a much more visceral experience through the eyepiece than on a screen!
