James, congrats on getting your scope.

What eyepieces did it come with?

Eyepieces can be a tough decision as you will get loads of advice, and it really just depends on your budget. Your 10" is the same as mine, an f/5, and is quite taxing on budget eyepieces and will be soft around the outer edge (stars won't be pinpoint).

If you can live with that, and prefer to just nudge the dob and keep the object centered in the FOV, then you'll be able to get some cheaper good quality GSO plossls or GSO Superviews.

If you've got some spare cash and want the quality, widefield views with stars crisp and pinpoint right to the edge, then the sky is the limit.. you can spend $200 - $900 for a single eyepiece. Though $900 is the absolute extreme.

There's loads of mods you can do to your 10", just check the IceInSpace site for some of the mods I've done, as well as the Equipment threads for mods others have done.

Also, take advantage of your local help.. Louie (atalas) also lives in blacktown, and is a most knowledgeable and helpful gentleman. He'll be able to help you set it up, find objects, and most importantly, collimate your scope.

You will need to learn to collimate your scope, or at least, check the collimation. If your scope is not collimated properly (the optics don't line up properly), then you'll get fuzzy blurry views of planets etc that won't seem to come to focus properly.. and wonder if you've bought a lemon.

If you don't mind driving, come up to the central coast observing sessions we have, or find a local club and go along to their viewing nights. You'll learn a lot that way.

Good luck!

The only way that the edge coma in the superview really bothers me is that faint stretched stars keep distracting me when I'm scanning for DSOs.
