New to IIS
G-day Guy's & Gal's of IIS
In at last as they say. Here's a short bio.
Came to Aus in 1976 from Alderney in the Channel Islands (when I learn how to I will post position of island & Thornlie home with Google Earth)
ATM I am off work with Tendonitus of the wrist since mid June, that's bad for work but great for following all the forums in IIS. I have an OP on the 20th which I hope will sort it out.
Got my first scope a 4.5 inch Newt on wobbly EQmount for Halleys comet then in 1990 sold it and bought 8 inch Celestron Dob, Which was knocked off from my carport 3 mths ago. Luckily all covered by insurance
Looking forward to becoming part of the IIs family.

aboard Dave!
Sorry to hear about your wrist and your scope! Good news is that the cost of Dobs has come down a lot in recent years and you could probably get a larger scope for less than you paid for your Celestron.
Here's a thought... If you get a 12", you can pretty much guarantee that no one will run off with it!

Hi Dave!
to IIS, great to see a lurker come out of the shadows and introduce themselves. You'll make plenty of friends here, both online and in person if you can find some near you. We've got a great friendly community and I hope you find some threads of interest you can participate in.

Hi Dave,
welcome to the group, sorry to here about your scope being stolen.
Unfortunately there are people out there who are really at the bottom end of the gene pool when it comes to their social skills. Good to see the insurance company came to the party though.
cheers

Hello Dave!
I'm a newcomer to IIS as well, so I'm not sure if I've been here long enough to say 'welcome', but seeing as I came here from the UK in Dec 1975 maybe we have something in common.
Like you I made 'special provisions' for viewing Halley's comet in '86 and I have a few stories to tell and a hair-raising picture that members may find amusing but I'm not sure where to post them - maybe 'Observational Astronomy' is the place.
I've just purchased a Meade ETX 125AT to see if it will be suitable for a near-future grey nomad existence, but don't tell anyone here as they've all got aperture fever and many suggested an 8 or 10-in Dob. If they find out there'll be much gnashing of teeth, wringing of hands, kicking of cats (feline) and general tearing of garments. (Sorry everyone, only joking!)
I bought theis sope yesterday, which is probably the reason Sydney is now drenched with rain storms. Is this one of the laws of telescopes?
By the way, I like the 'guys and gals'. I seem to remember this was the catchphrase of Jimmy Saville, but the world has moved on and the 'gals' seem to have turned into 'guys'.
Dave, all the best for the op and return to work.
Regards,
Mike Oakey / Okiscopey / ETX125 and not much else! / How do you add this to the end automatically?

It's called your "signature", and you can change it in your User Control Panel, which you'll find labelled "User CP" in the blue bar at the top left.

Hi Dave,
Welcome aboard, and thanks for the advise. I have now placed my 60mm wobbletronic on the front verandah.

Welcome to IIS Dave. A word of advice, make your next scope look like mine, really ugly, with all the mods and gadgets. No-one would think of knocking it off. If you were going to the trouble of knocking off a scope you would at least steal one that looks like it works not Frankenstein's monster, at least that is my theory

Thanks All.
Since viewing IIS over the last couple of months (hrs & hrs) I have to say that I have learnt more about astronomy than in all the years before.
? Can anyone please explain how to get maps from Google Earth into My Place From Space thread.
Have done a signature following Mike's message for Okiscopey

GSO SV 30 & GSO 2" Barlow from OneOfOne
I have also messaged Matt (circumpolar) about his 12" Dob. As this was my first attempt at buying im not sure if it went through.
If & when you are on line Matt could you let me know if you have or not recieved anything

Even though I'm in the wrong hemisphere I've joined anyhow because I've ended up reading and printing articles off this site more than anywhere else over the last few weeks through finding links on CloudyNights forum.
