Review of 40D as astro camera...
http://astrosurf.com/buil/eos40d/test.htm
Its looking interesting. I quote:
An important difference between the 40D and the 350D/400D (but also 20D, 30D) is the adoption of the 14 bits coding. These 14 bits are really observed on the decoded 40D RAW. This performance very close approaches that met in astronomical CCD cameras. It is an essential advance, the 40D is now a precision instrument, in particular for stellar photometry'

No matter what decision you make today, it will always be superseded by a better decision in the future

This looks like it has all the requisite features on-board...ability to focus via the lcd and exposures over 30 secs being my favourites.
Any idea of the price point in Oz?

Got my EOS T-adapter today, so I will be trying my 40D out in the next few days, weather permitting. Christian's review has reinforced my desire to get this camera on the back of my scope.
Of course, my crappiness as an astrophotographer will be exposed.

I'd *really* love a 40D.. almost more than a 5D. Full frame sensor vs live focus.. hmm.

its only money mike get both, then imagine what you could cover with 3 cameras. the filter on the 40D would be better if it had more of a range though- so you could pick up more Ha etc. Hutech modded one would be nice, or Yun getting a cooled version!!!

I'm waiting to see how Canon will respond with the 5D replacement, which is apparently not too far away. Bet it will have all the nice features of 40D - but problably lower frame rate. I would imagine Canon will be trying pretty hard on tail of Nikon's recent D3 and D300.

Yeap it does sound nice for a upgrade!! Has anyone seen any noise comparisons and spectrum response for this camera? wonder if its any better at the Ha end than the rest? I like the idea of the live preview!

Wow, ability to control it without touching the cam is a winner for me. I've never liked the 20D, 30D bodies though. I like the 1D series
