What you call context is merely the environment. You can't control it. As I said before you make your own decision and bear the consequences regardless of how hostile your environment is. Bad choices are just that. You don't blame the system or the rest of the world. If life sucks you do everything you can to get out of the ditch. You don't get agro and go burn everything and cry on telly how poor or oppressed you are.

Unfortuanately we've seen here that continually giving handouts to groups who think they are ostracised has acheived little to resolve their greviances and social issues

Social engineering may work in part, demolish the high rise housing estates, spread them through the community, improve youth facilities, work for the dole etc

these young people, after putting up with this way of life for so long, are past the point of your level headed thinking. they are sick of having nothing and are now trying get some attention by violence, possibly the only way they know that will actually work.

Maybe i'm off the mark here but when i see people from Ethiopia or similar famine ravaged countries , i don't think i have seen them riot over having nothing, having nothing doesn't directly leed to violence there is a choice here , i could be wrong though

Many cultures that we would consider poor have a culture of sharing what little there is. I can easily see how respect for others might be easier to maintain despite famines and other hardship.

Western culture does not value sharing much at all. In fact it is viewed with suspicion and commonly labeled as communism.

No only that: the whole system is actually based on maxim "the greed is good", it is the motor of economy.. Why anyone should bother to do anything if there is no personal benefit?
So, if you are not greedy enough, it's your fault you are poor ("bad decision, bear the consequences")

With this way of thinking, what you can really expect from young people (who will always learn the essentials from elders and become better than their teachers) ? . Only worse.

Actually it is surprising how SMALL number of people are involved in those riots. Maybe the people are not that bad after all and we can hope for the better

Its times like this you sit back and wonder WTF it's all about while the mob runs riot in the UK becuase they don't have their fare share of Ipods, pads and playstations and anarchy rules

Ten per cent of Somali children aged under five are dying every 11 weeks in the country's devastating famine, which is spreading faster than aid agencies can cope with, UN officials warned on Wednesday. The UN representative to Somalia also told the UN Security Council that warlords will take control of areas of Mogadishu abandoned by Islamist insurgents last weekend unless the transitional government quickly gets a grip.

The envoy, Augustine Mahiga, said about half the Somali population, about 3.7 million people, are now at risk from famine. The UN estimates that more than 12 million are affected across East Africa.

I did'nt see anyone remotely look like they were starving on telly maybe then they'd have had an excuse.

I agree and that is the problem with capitalism it won't work unless people want and then buy that shiny new gadget because if people don't keep buying the system will collapse. And buying more stuff leads to more wasting of scarce resources. If westerners thought like the poorer nations capitalism would fail. My point is the powers that be wan't us to want the latest and greatest or the house of cards will collapse.

Yep... scary, but inevitable in this or some other form.
World will be very different from we thought (or wish ) it to be.

It's not about being poor it's about a lack of hope. Some people no matter how hard their lot is, they will have hope that things can be better, they they can make things better. That hard work can make things better. However not everyone is like that.

Remember the out cry when it was said that a family earning over 150K in Australian were rich. The western world will eat itself as want replaces need.

For those that thought this was just a bunch of hair-raising rebels and anarchists, who can't be stuffed pulling themselves out of the gutter, here are some of those that have been arrested and charged for vandalism and looting:

'among those arrested are a school tutor, an estate agent, accountants, a postman, students, a ballerina, social workers, graduates, and a daughter of a millionaire - hardly 'disenfranchised youth'.'
