Thanks for another useful example of a "kill thread"...

And in the end . . . it achieves diddly-squat!

You can rant & rave in here for the next 10 years, but it won't make the U.S. go metric, or us old farts change to using ONLY Metric. So it becomes a boring read, coz it is just repeating itself now.

But no doubt you will keep going on about it. That's your prerogative. But the subject has worn out its welcome coz it will achieve nothing.

The results in your own poll above tells volumes.
agree.

heh- i think i opened up a can of worms with my post earlier, taking it to mean we kill the thread.
my earlier post was not suggesting we kill the thread. keep going at it forever, if you like- it isan interesting read and disk space is cheap.

at the time it was more a suggestion that since okiscopey's post was original, funny and summed up a lot of earlier points of view i thought his post could act like a great full stop to the thread. imagine reading this thread in a year's time- the first post you read would be his humorous addition and well, there you go.

perhaps my post earlier should have read:
" perhaps the thread should end with okiscopey's post because it's a laugh ain't it! "

still, i write these things at work and often my typing does not keep up with my thoughts.

So did I.

I also found another amusing slant on the topic, using the so-called Metric Bible. See http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=694963

Couldn't agree more Ron !

Also a reminder to some about the IIS TOS Rules regarding Religious content.

What is a diddly-squat?? Is it something Americans use?? How did it get to Ballarat??

If so is it an Imperial diddly-squat?

Cheers

Hey guys...
I haven't posted to this thread for ten days. I think the reason why this thread has been kept afloat is because individuals keep voting for selections in the poll. Please note this was not my doing...

As to the "Metric Bible" just for levity and to calm this slightly heated and somewhat passionate debate! It was never intended to offend anyone or anybody. I'm really sorry if you were....

As a alternative, those some wanting some non-offensive levity, then I suggest you read;

or view the YouTube Page ;

******************
To be quite honest when I started this thread one of the questions that had confused me for ages. Why do we as amateurs still call mirrors or objectives in "inches", while we always call eyepieces as metric "millimetres"?

I Still Have No Real Answer

Summary of the Issues in This Thread.

As a note, the imperial versus metric debate is currently a very hot topic in the US.
http://hubpages.com/hub/metric_syste...mperial_system

Similar threads to this one, but not as "heavy as his one", can be viewed at;
http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=74490
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=36122

However, one of the best ones is;
http://www.ehmac.ca/everything-else-...-imperial.html
This has a similar Canadian poll to ours, but interestingly Canada is going through the conversion of system at the moment. Interestingly, the balance here is very much different than ours. Ie. Metric Yes :15, Metric/Imperial Maybe:76 and Imperial only 3. The Ice in Space forum is shows far more dichotomy.

We can interpret these ideas in various way, but it seems to me that places that were not metric are in favour of change the system, while those after metric system was introduced tilt either equal or slightly more in favour of imperial.

My understanding is there is to be a additional bill to at the Metric System in America via the US Congress in mid-February 2008, in which there to be a decision to go the same way Australia did in the 1970's.

It seems there is a slow movement for reform, though the scientific arguments against tend to places like;
http://forum.cheapbooks.com/index.php?showtopic=412

As a final comment, there is an quite excellent webpage that will answers many questions made here (and elsewhere) about the metric system and how the metric terminology is used and is adopted n the world;
http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/faq.html

Yet the summary on this particular page is relevant to some. This talks about the adoption of America to the metric system. Here is stated;

Why is the federal government making the metric transition?

The federal [American] government, realizing the necessity to produce "world class" products so they can be sold worldwide, is providing leadership in helping industry make the transition to metric. This is being accomplished by the government's switching to metric usage and requesting its contractors to supply metric products when the government buys goods from our industries.

Note: Finally, I would like to point-out that if you don't like the topic then just don't read it. Really, perhaps you are right that this topic has continued too long, but at least it is relevant and of interest to some here - that is why people are still voting towards the open poll.

We all likely agree... this debate won't change the world, but at least we are able to debate it and think about it.

Again, if I have offended you here I'm deeply sorry. This was never my intent.

Kindest Regards;

AJames
