A "set-top box" is required now (called ADSL modem, or cable modem, or just plain modem for those unfortunate enough to still be on dial-up) and will likely be required with any new technology. There needs to be an access device that presents the data link in a form a household can use, i.e. Ethernet or WiFi.

I'm guessing that subscribers will get a minimal functionality device with their contract and that third parties or the providers themselves may offer better equipment with added functionality at subscribers' expense. This is the case now with ADSL modems (some value-add models supporting VoIP, WiFi, etc over and above the plain network access and Ethernet port).

Cheers
Steffen.

Thanks Steffen, but I was refering to POTS...ie plain old telephone service.

For example my copier/fax/scanner/colour laser is not a cheap machine and I would not expect to have to fork out for a replacement just because optical fibre is being forced onto my internet connection.

I found this on the link below and it explains that you can still use your old phone and since faxes work the same I can't see any reason why they wouldn't work as well. Keep em coming I am sure we will answer all the questions eventually. I just think it is a great step foward for our country. Anyway its fun to find the answers to all the questions everyone is comming up with as to why we should go down this path. And the installation is going to be opt out and the government is going to pay for the installation to the house (but if you opt out and later want it you will have to pay yourself) so it is not extra on top of the money from taxpayers apparently it is already budgeted for in the $48Billion.

"Can I use my current telephone handsets?Yes you can! As long as they aren’t one of those old rotary phones, or ones you see in movies from the 1800’s!"

It's a bit hard to be partisan when listing the number and type of ports to be included in a Network Terminating Unit or where the proposed points of interconnect will be located. In answer to your direct question Fred, I would seek out the specifications of the car, take it for a test drive myself and talk to a few knowledgeable people to see if I'd missed anything important. Have fun beating up on the straw man.

Oh I'm sorry, I missed that. I haven't had a telephone land line for many years so I didn't think of that…

Cheers
Steffen.
