how low can you go

Hi Barry,

others who have had suucess have inspired me to try again.

can you tell me what the minimum RAM requirement is please?

I would like to try it on a netbook (Cache Memory:512 KB - L2 Cache
RAM:1 GB)

(this little toy does run 0.9.1 with all the star files. )

what are my chances of success?

My notebook is similar to yours so it should be OK.
I would suggest you keep a back-up of 0.9.1 handy as you may prefer that to 0.10.1 which is still being developed.
I am getting used to 0.10.1 and trying to write some scripts.

i run Stellarium on an Acer Aspire One (8.9" netbook) and it runs just fine.

That said, i did put an extra gig of RAM and 320Gb HDD in there

Scripts

Hi Barry,
Could you please check if I am on the right tack?
By adding the following line from "Solar Eclipse 2017" script from Adam Fenley's code as the second last line of a script ---

core.setDate("now");

it updates the view to today's date and time.

I also found (while experimenting) that by adding the following line at the end of a script ----

core.setObserverLocation("Beaumont Hills, Australia"," ");

your view is restored to Beaumont Hills. Obviously other users would substitute their (home) locations.
Whilst this extra code does not appear to "stop" the script, it seems to allow a user to continue without exiting the program. Unfortunately another script can not be loaded until after a re-start.

Hi Peter
I assume that is correct to set the date time back to the present.

I have not re-made my scripts yet to be presentable. I made some changes to the original but did not have new commands for some of the moves.

I have not bothered with scripts except to experiment some commands. I really have no need of scripts so I have not spent any time perfecting one.

As I said previously the sample scripts did not indicate when they had finished so I just added some commands that would let me know and I have not tried to run a second script.

When the script engine is listed as being operational I will have another look at it.

Barry

Hi Barry,
Thanks for the update. It appears the script engine could already be "operational" but not documented.
Matthew Gates seems to have written the manual for 0.9.1 and a number of scripts (some even updated for 0.10.1) which I have edited to test some of my ideas. His Labels.ssc (new engine?) code is particularly helpful.
Could you please suggest where I might look for more help on the "new commands"?
In particular I have a use for LabelMgr and colour in my text statements but can't find any explanation of syntax. For example the colour white is (I think) "#aaaaaa" whilst red is "#ff0000". Is there a library somewhere?

Hi Peter

I have no more information than you on commands etc. Matthew is the expert in this area but he is involved in another major project at the moment.

Hi Barry,
I have now successfully found what I was looking for on stellarium.org and by googling.
Thanks for trying to help me with my scripts.

Issues Fixed with Stellarium-0.10.2

Hi all,

I posted my issues with 10.1 to the Stellarium forum - basically my MSI Wind displayed a black background with a black popup where I could only read the title bar with a Microsoft Visual C++ error. I read the posts on this forum and checked that my (almost brand new) MSI Wind had the latest Intel graphics card drivers.

A link to version 10.2 on this thread solved all the problems on my MSI Wind. A netbook is a very practical way of running this and I'm now happily running Stellarium on my Wind (15% overclocked) at a steady 15 to 16 frames per second with a 60 degree FOV and the 'Increase Time Speed' option advanced so that 1 minute of proper time is displayed in 1 second.

Tonight I'll try it on my Dell dual core Inspiron (Vista) where 10.1 ran, albeit sluggishly, at a modest 0.03 frames per second.

Stellarium is a great product so let's hope this sub release fixes the issues that many loyal users have reported.

Edit: Vista now happily running at 9 to 10 frames per second (in 1920 x 1200 resolution), with a pretty ordinary laptop graphics card.

Hi Bill

Glad you got the program up and running with the modified libstelmain.dll. There was a check line in the original code to check some feature of the display driver that is apparently not in all display drivers. Remming this line fixed the problem of crashing. Also included was a fix to the bug that messed up selecting a new location.

Regarding your Dell the slow speed is most certainly caused by no OpenGl driver for the display card. A check on the manufacturer of the driver may get another driver. I have had similar problems in the past when XP installed its driver for the display. Using the disk that came with the board fixed the problem. If this fixes your Dell let me know.

The full 0.10.2 version is expected for release soon. When the script feature is operational. It will be built with Qt 4.5.0 and should have a speed improvement of about 25%

pop up menus are not happy

morning all

I'm running 10.2 on a brand new high-end laptop, and when I click on any of the menus they come up as coloured junk.

(I have changed the config.ini to my screen size with no effect.)

any ideas?

Sounds like you need a new video driver. Is it an ATI. There has been a bit of problem in this area but a solution is not available yet. It appears to be a problem with QT and how it handles OpenGL. It is being investigated

I have only low end computers so I have no problems

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I've only just come across this thread...

Is it possible to release two versions of stellarium - one which uses the opengl support in the video drivers, and one that is linked against the Mesa (opengl software renderer) library?

The second one would run for people who are having problems with their native opengl support, the mesa library would do all the opengl stuff and not rely on the video card drivers at all. It might be a little slower for some things but at least it would run and should give the same results.

You could have an option in the config to choose between using Mesa and native opengl.

The mesa website is here:
http://www.mesa3d.org/

cheers, Bird

Hi Stellarium Users

Here is a little news on the progress of Stellarium development. Version 0.10.3 has made great improvements over the the last released version 0.10.2. Many of the requests for features have now been either re-implemented or added in the form of plugins that can be automatically loaded as required.

I would expect that version 0.10.3 will be released before the end of April to show off the plugin feature and bug fix and I also believe that the ultimate goal of full version release 1.0.0 is not too far away now that many of the requested features that were making the core of the program complicated can be added as plugins.

Plug in modules already available include AngleMeasurment, Telescope FOV's, Earth satellites, Text user interface (missing for version 0,10.xx), compassMarks, and we are working on an integrated telescope control plugin module that will allow telescope control to be implemented from within the program. When installed these plugins seamlessly interface from new buttons that appear on the bottom menu.

A new user manual for the latest release is also on the way which we hope will answer most of the problems that users seem to have.

Barry

alt version

All the improvements sounds great Barry, it looks like the development team has really had its head down.

B.T.W, At the moment I am back on 0.9.0 because the current version wont work properly on either of my laptops. - In the new version, has a cure been found for the boxes of mush some ATI drivers produce when you click on the menu buttons?

If not, is it possible to put up a link to 0.9.1 on the Stellarium site, together with a recommendation for people who have problems with the new program?

Regards Rider

Hi Rider

The problems with the ATI display have been looked at by a few people and most have found a solution. It appears to be tied up with driver versions and the driver version 09.3 fixed it for one. Others cured the problem by setting the display properties "Hardware acceleration to none"
