So much so that most people don't even know the original.
Pretty much the same with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7wk7n0i1EM

This well known piece

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX6J5-13c-0

is a cover of

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd60nI4sa9A

In a similar vein this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gh5zTCdNH_0

has been done in versions such as
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZlx5...eature=related
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1591gryAMyo

While looking for that last clip I found this, which is a reasonable version.

I love the song "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones - everyone knows this version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCGAA...eature=related

I love even more the version put out by Eric Burdon & the Animals http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK3up...eature=related

There are so many covers out there of this song that its not funny.

That is seriously great. Don't know why I hadn't heard it.

Of course The Animals weren't the only ones to cover the Stones. I always found this one very satisfying .

Hi,

There is a composition called "The Gloria" from the Mass "Puer Natus est Nobis" by Thomas Tallis, who was doing his thing in 1554 Tudor England. It is very solemn liturgical music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0vDZI6xszk

Tangerine Dream covered this almost 430 years later in the soundtrack for the Michael Mann film "The Keep", which is a favourite of mine for its great cast and photography, although Mann did put in a lot of frankly silly stuff. This great in a pair of good headphones:

A cleaner version which is closer to the original is on the Tangerine Dream album release of the soundtrack:

This would not be a record though for the greatest time span between original and cover. That might belong to the Boney M cover of Psalm 137, "By the Rivers of Babylon".

Cheers

I have never been able to find my favourite cover in You Tube or anywhere else.

I went to see Herman's Hermits and they did 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' and it sent chills right through my body and blew the whole crowd away and the standing ovation went for about 5 minutes!

Probably the best performance of any song I have ever seen in my whole life.

I don't post very often, but when i saw this thread, i just could not resist posting these:
A Disney classic
Original version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnqgR...eature=related

and the cover by the KISS Demon himself
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fXfS...feature=fvwrel

While I like the original, as a KISS fan (I said that out loud didn't I), I can never go past Gene Simmon's version.

This might get some interesting comments I think - time to sit back and watch

Davin,

I saw Satch, Vai and Petrucci play that as part of G3 a couple of years ago in Sydney.

A magnificent cover of Uriah Heap's Lady in Black by Ensiferum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1Zwzr7swtI (there's a version with 1.5 million views but has horrendous sound quality).

Pure awesome.

Andrew and Grant, forget KD Lang and Jeff Buckley's renditions of Hallelujah; Pain of Salvation takes the cake: http://youtu.be/sfxScuK3Qy4

7:32 -- chills down spine.
