Definitely Contact, best movie ever. Must have watched my copy a hundred times. Drives the missus wild, she just doesn't get it.

I don't think there has been a movie mentioned in this thread yet that I haven't enjoyed.
(Yes Big Dave, I loved Flesh Gordon )
Picking a favorite is pretty difficult, so I'll mention one that I don't think has got a gurnsey yet - 12 Monkeys.
Oops! Gotta mention Dark City as well.
Oh, and the recent Solaris re-make with George Clooney.
Yep, it's hard to pick one favorite.

My favourites are the Matrix series and the recent (2005) Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy ... I like the contemplation of what could be beyond our perceived reality.

My favourite Sci Fi / Disaster movie is a combined effort, the original "day the Earth Stood Still". Simply because everything is scarier in black and white, and if the biggest threat to mankind from space is a slowwww movie robot named Gort, we are doing OK!

Contact is a great sci-fi.
More science and less fiction......or is that the other way around.

Best Science Fiction Movie? It has to be "2001 a Space Odessy" Even in this post StarWars era the special effects are still believable, and it has a story that doesn't involve mindless explosions.

Agreed Ian. I saw the movie with my big brother in '68 when it was released. I remember back in the early 70's that there were discussions going on in what approximated cyber-space (uni pubs and libraries) at the time, in reference to actually being able to find errors in the physics of the production. There were only half a dozen or so examples found, and not all of them "glaring" - not bad for a movie.
One memorable one was Heywood Floyd's meal tray on his trip to the space station, where after he took a sip from a liquid compartment the food didn't stay in the straw as some would expect in a zero-g environment, but went back down into the container. There was an opposing camp that postulated that in drawing liquid from the container it would create a partial vacuum in the container thus drawing the food back down the straw. LOL! There were a couple of others, but overall it goes to show how well made the movie was and the attention to detail that Kubrick applied by the level of the bickery going on.

I've always concidered the best disaster movies to be "The Day After Tomorrow" and "On The Beach" (the 1950's version with Ava Gardner, not so much the fairly recent Bryan Brown one).
The threat of nuclear war is always in the back of peoples minds. What would happen if they actually did hit those buttons?
Both of these senarios are disturbingly real.
The stuff of nightmares.

Space Cowboys for scifi
&
Apollo 13 I guess could be classed as a disaster film.

Alien quadrilogy
The alien quadrilogy is my favorite with Aliens Director's Cut being the absolute sci fi action/thriller.
In space, no one can hear you scream!

It's a toss up between 2001 Space Odyssey and The Matrix series.
But I think The Matrix gets it for some mind blowing concepts.

Without a doubt for me it's the original War Of The Worlds with Gene Barry. The Martian machines still stir up imagination and awe on the home theatre, would be great to see on the big screen. It's amazing that some 50 odd years on those machines still look so menacing that you could cut them into a 2009 sci fi and they would still look futuristic. I have lost track of how many times I have watched this movie. Forbidden Planet a close second, Contact is my third, Alien is my 4th, then 2001 and finally Starship Troopers. Hmmm seems I like watching things that blow up. Disaster film? How about the recent Day The Earth Stood Still - now that was a complete disaster.

LOL my husband and I love these 3 movies, they are great.
Almost as good as Alien Vs Predator...a good escape from reality after a crappy day in the real world!

Starship Troopers! Love it!
Have you read the book? Even better than the movie.
Robert A Heinlein put out some of the very best sci fi from the Golden Age.
I'm a huge fan, as you can see by the sig next to my avatar.

I'm with iceman - The Matrix movies do for me; I'm in love with Trinity. And, the movie epitomizes the simulation theory of the universe. Crazy or not, it's mind bending to think about.
