Hmm - not IT I'm afraid, though I do have an honours degree in Computer Science

I'm and engineer - I make stuff... astro stuff. I do the all the Artemis camera bits, stuff for BC+F, custom bits... all sorts.

Lucky, huh?

Arthur

I am an optometrist based in a busy practice in Timaru NZ. I have been doing this for the last 10+ years. Before that I dabbled in the open aired markets selling T-shirts etc. (If you have seen Only Fools and Horses (uk program)) then you would have a good idea what I did!). Great job but early starts and crap money ended that career.
Optometry is looking all about optics but really it is health based profession.

I got into astronomy when the film Contact came out(no laughing!!). I have only recently had the time and funds to devote to the hobby but am finding it very rewarding but with any hobby the journey is better than arriving at the inn. So you are always hankering over the next bit of equipment etc.......

my job

"You ask me what it is I do,
Well actually, you know,
I'm partly a liason man, and partly P.R.O.
Essentially I integrate the current export driive,
And basically I'm viable from 10 o'clock till five."

Apologies to Sir John Betjeman for that
Actually, it is amazing how many of you guys are high flying electronic or IT types - no wonder that imaging is so popular
I am a Mechanical Engineer and work for large consulting groups such as Bechtel, Hatch, Bateman Kinhill etc., on large mining projects on contract. At present I am working on a project designing and building a Nickel plant in Botswana. My part??? Well, sitting in front of a computer trying to look busy and writing specifications and making sure that I have not left off any full stops. YES, the last time I actually did any engineering was a LONG time ago. That's why I recite lots of poetry and drive my colleagues nuts

I am retired now but I used to work for CSIRO in Structural Biology. We used to and still do solve the structure of biologically active proteins at an atomic resolution by means of xray diffraction to try and mediate or stop human disease.
None of this work is possible without a lot of support staff, from the tea ladies, workshop staff, electronic engineering staff, IT staff and so on, not necessarily in order of importance.
I have been very fortunate to have worked with a lot of very good people for a long time.

It has ideed been a fortunate life!

I've read all the posts in this thread and I think I am the first to admit to being a medico. I am a country GP that also delivers babies and does anaesthetics.
I have some interest in IT and taught myself how to use linux some years ago whilst I did a master in Astronomy from UWS. Sadly that degree is no longer but the same people have moved to JCU.
