My wife is currently playing "The Best of Phil Collins"

I might have to go and chop some wood for a while.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Pictures At An Exhibition (Live at the Lyceum 9/12/1970)

I do prefer the Newcastle City Hall recording from 1971 though.

Cheers,
Jason.

Also one of my favourites. I still have one of the verions on Vinyl somewhere, must dig it out and RIP to CD.
I also have a full orchestral version.

My favourite version is the Cleveland Orchestra/Maazel on Telarc. It's an amazing piece to listen to, sitting in the dark late at night.

And the original piano version? I don't know how you get more dynamics out of a piano than from a whole orchestra but there it is. I have Askenasy playing the piano version and also him conducting the PO with his, slightly revised, version of Ravel's orchestration. I've often wished there was an orchestral version with Carl Palmer on drums!!

BTW, don't rip the vinyl, buy a remastered version. They have cleaned up a lot of the 70's recording inadequacies. You know the music is worth the money!

I'm currently listening to some soothing music on the phone.
I keep hoping that the next song will be that perennial favourite, the Muzak version of "Muskrat Love".
So far I've not identified any of the songs played.

Heyyyy, this one sounds a little like a Zeppelin ballad.
and now it's transitioned into a John Denver type song.

I popped out to the Belrose JB HiFi at lunch and they had the Ashkenazy
piano / LA PO version on Decca CD, so it's now sitting here on my desk waiting
for home time. And at $8.99, a bargain!

Cheers,
Jason.

John Ogdon, playing Rachmaninov's Prelude in C sharp minor (to be followed by the prelude in G Minor). Both great compositions.

Yes, JB Hi Fi - an oasis of culture.

Hope you enjoy it!

I wonder whether he plays it 'as written' or 'as cleaned up'. Apparently the original score had some clangers in it, some of them probably mistakes (eg a beat missing in a bar on the left hand but not on the right), but others perhaps deliberate (eg right hand playing a G chord while the left plays an A - mistake or deliberate dissonance?).

She was terrific. I love "Going Back"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvWiiUgT8Nk

This was written by the great Goffin/King team. Carole King herself said that she was brought to tears by hearing Dusty's recording of the song.

I've been playing a lot Carole King's original demo version of their song "Pleasant Valley Sunday"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtyqPzeso5A

Despite the simple arrangement I like this version much more than that of the Monkees, professional as that was. A tribute to King's enormous talent.

Cheers

Wow!

That 1967 Ashkenazy piano performance is amazing, a great recording.

The PO version is excellent as well, thanks for the heads up David.

Cheers,
Jason.

I'm chuffed you like it.

Presently - David Sylvian, Approaching Silence. Me thinks this is observing night music. Plenty of space.
