Yes, I know. I've been told to, ... well ... can't repeat it here. I thought I was doing good for SCP, creating a bit of publicity after a bit of a dry spell and having a bit of lighthearted fun at the same time, which I did not intend to be at anyone's expense but it was taken that way by the two apostles.

Apparently that good "sense of humour" IIS is supposed to be lacking and SCP's got by the truckload, does not recognise IIS moderators. That is the only explanation I can think of.

No Steve, I don't think being a IIS moderator had anything to do with it. I think it was simply taken the wrong way, purely & simply. I couldn't see anything wrong with what you did, but donning the 'apostle cap' I can see how it could have been seen/taken in a different way, other than your intention.

I joined up for a look, always good to have some competition, but it's not my cup of tea (and I'm no wowser when it comes to colourful language). Basically it's because of the signal to noise ratio (I have even posted this opinion over there). I will keep an eye on it every now and then to see if it settles down.

Not the case here. I checked it out as I genuinely thought it may be another good a source of astro information. The first thread I opened was full of people swearing at each other for no apparent reason other than they could. The second one I opened had links to ****ographic material as some kind of joke. I won't put a link to that thread as I know there are young IIS members. I don't think pathetic sums it up. When people get over the fact that they can post whatever they want on that forum I think it will die as I did not see a single astro related post while I was there. There may be some very useful information on that site, I however do not want to sift through the **** to try and find it. Sorry Stu, but I think the actions of your initial members are going to turn a lot of people away.

I reckon it's pretty cool that there is an alternative to disneyworldinspace, even if it is a ribald 'hootersworld' type alternative, as this oppressive 'what about the children!' a la EDIT: (woops) mrs rev lovejoy from simpsons , was alienating some very good people.
Once the last of the howls of indignation (some dripping with testosterone?) have stopped echoing around the hallowed halls of disneyinspace, people will wonder what all the fuss was about.
CJ that is taking it a bit far to say there is no astro content i think.

Yeah Kearn. Dripping with testosterone. A colourful description, I know... but effective.

That's my take on some of the gratuitous use of language and very blokey sexual humour. Bit macho, don't you think? A little puffy chested. Not that I'm offended by it, It's just an observation which strikes me as fairly obvious. Not that I'm averse to behaving the same from time to time.

And for the record I am a member of that site, so it's not as if i'm intolerant or unable to accept it.

Who am I speaking with? Blind Freddy?

And while you're busy questioning other people about why they go there if they don't like it, why would you bother to be part of disneyworldinspace if it clearly irks YOU so much??? Most confusing, Kearn.

LOL Matt, I think they are just making a statement for now, I am sure that when their/our point is driven home, it is likely to abate
I find it hard to take it seriously that ANY amateur astronomers are serious contenders for the 'chopper reid award' or a threat to society, thats just an oxymoron.
My impression of the very general front bar publics view on the pursuit of such activities is to be that of an effeminate nerds bordering on some kind of possibly contagious form of obsessive autism or worse - sorry just saying what I know to be the reality.
maybe scp will help fight that stereotype?

mate...

again.. the point of the Chopper reference was to simply make a point, not something to be taken literally.

I'm quite aware the boys are just stretching their wings and making full use of the freedoms the new site affords them.

But keep blinding us with your keen insight into the common man.

PS be careful trotting out your version of "reality" in such a didactic manner. Sounds a little authoritarian. Thought you had a problem with that type of behaviour?

Trying to maintain a friendly relaxed atmosphere and having a set of reasonable rules and guidelines can hardly be seen as oppressive.
I think those most aggrieved are the few who thought they could influence site policy, rules and guidlines by flouting them, pushing the boundaries and trying to win support for some kind of popular revolution
Thankfully that didnt succeed and we still have disneyworldinspace to enjoy in its current form . Despite all the noise and bluster about how many were disenchanted, it turned out to be not very many .

Perhaps if the people over at scp focus on what they can do to build their site instead of spending so much energy on postulating over how bad disneyworldinspace is, it is much more likely to suceed.

Yes I'll admit I had my 'fun' in there for a couple of days, just to test the waters (& Stu the head honcho) And I will continue to have 'fun' to a degree. Because there is hardly any moderation there, I've chosen to moderate myself. That means no swearing from me. It's MY choice apparently. I'm still a male aussie though, if someone wants to post a pic of a chick in a bikini, I'll comment on it, too right I will!

I have the blinders on, I don't see the jokes/spam/swearing/etc because I choose not to. Astronomy is my life!! It's not a hobby. I choose to see that.
