I'll be coming, hope the weather is better than it was at the last one I was at two years ago.

Looking forward to meeting some of you.

Not me

Won't be going to Ilford but would like to wish all those going a great weekend, and hope the skies are kind to you.

Will catch up with a few (or a lot) of you at Bretti Reserve at the end of April. (can't even go to pony club this weekend as I'm working)

since when do you need a scope to go Deeno?

there will be enough pony club scopes up there to keep you occupied for a fortnite

get that camper trailer packed and get up there i say!

besides - think about how much room is left for the Bourbon if you don't take a scope

and if you grease the springs on the trailer proper - you could throw in a couple of extra bottles of bubbly for Amanda - if you get my drift

geoff

Plug Old Ilford Rd, Ilford into your GPS, nearest cross road Tara Loop Rd.

There are two entrances to Tara Loop, you take the second entrance. This entrance is about 9km from the Hwy.

That's ok Allan, the more information the better (especially since I've never been).
Thanks for that Trevor.

It wasnt just for his information, some people are afraid to ask obvious questions. There are still a lot of first timers, and I got lost the first time I went to Wiruna.

Hey Michael.

Why don’t we organise a meet on Friday morning now and then anyone else who may be interested can jump on board as it gets closer?
I know at least one other person has messaged me and said they’d be interested in meeting up along the way, so it might be good if we can formalise some plans.

Building on a previous post, Richmond seems to be a fairly central place I think most people would be passing through. This would be traveling via Bells Line of Roads & Castlereagh, which is directly on the route that is suggested by google maps for traveling to Ilford from both the Central Coast and also from Sydney.

The alternative route gmaps suggests is via Castlereagh Highway which is parallel but south of Richmond, if anyone wants to go an alternate route and still meet up, post here and we can amend the plans. Otherwise, does Richmond seem a convenient meeting place? Any others want to mention interest at this stage? It’d just be a matter of meeting up at a convenient location and heading up to Ilford as a group so we can stick together once we arrive and ensure we’re not too spread out on the field.

We’d also need to decide a meeting time. According to the info pack, the opening address is at 2:30PM, so I suspect we’ll want to arrive at Wiruna well before that, with enough time to check in and register (registration tent), drive to and setup our scopes on the observing field, drive back and setup our tents on the camping area (correct me if my assumptions are wrong).

It’s 150km and approximately two hours travel time from Richmond to Ilford, so perhaps suggesting a meeting time of 10AM at Richmond? Is that a good idea? Anyone with more knowledge/experience traveling to the SPSP, please feel free to suggest changes/alternatives.

Patrick

Yeah, of course.
Me too.
But my shortcuts are infamous.

Be sure to arrive with plenty of DAYLIGHT to set up and get your bearings.
cheers.

Telstra NextG works fine up there. We tend to get just as good data transmission there as we do in Sydney.

Don't expect any other carrier to work, even Optus with their new 900Mhz stuff.

Patrick,
That sounds great to me, I was going to suggest 9:00am at Richmond, but thats only because im a "always be there Mega early" type person.
To the others who have been there before, does that sound about right? getting to Ilford at around midday a good idea?

It's an easy 2hr drive from Richmond.

Beware of speed zones, it changes from 60-80-60 quite a few times on the run across to Lithgow and the police know it.

Also beware of the 100->50 zones on the Casltereagh Hwy from Lithgow to Ilford, every town is a 50 zone.

Last real supply stop is Woolies in Lithgow. Though you can get petrol at Capertee if needed (about 30km from Ilford)

Andrew, more than happy to bump back the time meet time to 9AM.
Will definitely prefer the additional time to unpack and set up all the gear at Wiruna without rushing.

I did a trial run with full gear out in the front yard this evening.
Set up the tent, blow up mattress, sleeping bag, telescope, new dew controls, collimated and did some observing.

Unfortunately, ran into numerous troubles along the way, still trying to sort a few out :S Seems nothing's easy.
