While I understand the stance of the site management, being a former moderator myself; I don't understand why comments that were giving confirmation to JD being deleted wholesale. Can someone tell me why the whole thread was deleted? I would have thought that the offending comments would be deleted and the ones that addressed the subject of the thread kept.
Please respond. I have asked questions could the moderators answer thanks.
Well having been in a position of possible legal actions by certain posts that where made on this site, i can say that Mike and all the moderators, assisted me greatly and dealt with the situation with helpfull advice and honest opinions.
They backed me in my comments all the way, and i respected that greatly.
It is these actions that are taken by Mike and the mods, the ones that don't make the covers, that mean the most as to their intentions, and respect for forum members.
The thread was deleted after due consideration was given and options weighed up, i was kept informed of the decisions being debated and had no problem with their final decision to delete the thread.
I am sure that in this case, Mike and the mods would have given the same amount of thought and debate into the possible results that "could" happen.
I think throwing a hissy fit if a post is deleted, just makes it worse.
Trevor, who are you suggesting is throwing a hissy fit? I am just asking why all the thread was deleted. I now know from Mike that the originating post was deleted and hence all the rest were deleted. That makes sense. Just wanted to know what happened to the bona fide posts.
Because the thread starter deleted his own post, so the rest of the thread made no sense whatsoever.
Yes it did. The rest of the thread did not carry on from the first post because it was only a photo of their front cover, but the rest of the thread became an entity on it's own.
AND the original S&S cover in the first post was never defaced! I can't deface something in someone elses post!
PLUS I wouldn't call the humour I used as defacing anything anyway. I changed a couple of their article headings. I PM'd jdb about the incident!
You are all aware of my humour, and with all the pics I have altered in the past I have never been rude, insulting, damaging or nasty! I just try to make people have a bit of a laugh in a world full of tension. That is me, and if you don't like what I do then you don't like me, coz that is the real me.
Or did you get upset that I made up an IceInSpace magazine cover and called it "Icing Space"? or was it the mock-up book in the pic below.
I am at a loss to find out why the whole thread was deleted and why no-one has bothered to contact me (still) by email or PM to explain what I did wrong!
starkler and 1ponders have pretty much summed it all up for me anyway. But to answer some other comments..

He deleted his original post, which said to me:
a) He was offended by it
b) All that was left in the thread was your defaced covers

Had you PM'd him before you posted them, and got his permission, then there would be no issue.
Some call it humour, others call it defacing and in bad taste. So to err on the side of caution, it was deleted.
I would've done the same if it was an AS&T cover, or a picture of an Argo Navis, or some other artwork that a forum member had created. It did not matter what it was. How do you think Gary Kopff would've felt if you took a picture of AN and modified it to have springs poking out, cracks in it, etc.? I'm almost certain he would be offended by it. I'm quite sure Greg Bryant would be offended if the same treatment were applied to an AS&T cover.
Unless you get the authors permission first, you should not post modified versions of their artwork, regardless of whatever humour value some people see in it.
There's been comments about legal aspects/copyright etc, while there's probably some elements of that in what was done, to me it was more about respect. I simply deemed it inappropriate.

The trouble with these things, it only takes 1 person to complain and it is ruined for the majority. That's why my posts have dwindled to a fine trickle. We neeed a fun and rip off section that doesn't allow members who comlpain access, that way people with a sense of humour and an adult view on life don't have to put up with the bull**** of the few members who have a stick up their arses
Come off it Gazz.. what majority? How do you know what the majority think? Whichever side of the argument you are on, it's always the vocal minority that posts. You had 1 post deleted 6 months ago because it was off-topic and about policitics. I fail to see how you can apply that to every situation since then.
I can tell you that there is very little moderation done on the IceInSpace Forums. The community is mostly self-moderating and occassionally only a simple reminder is needed to keep people to the guidelines. It's extremely rare that posts and threads are deleted, so before people start claiming censorship and general restricted chat, please get your facts straight.
Ken, I'm sorry I have not PM'd or emailed you to explain why the action was taken, but you can read my reasons above. Most of my time at home on the weekends is spent with my family, and I had very little time to spend on the computer sorting out this issue. While the moderators and I make every effort to PM the person(s) affected by deleting a post or thread, we do it as a courtesy not as a rule. I just didn't have time this weekend, sorry.
The other issue arising from this incident is "advertising", and what is appropriate for vendors to post. We've allowed vendors to reply to specific questions about upcoming issues, etc, but starting a new thread is something different again. I'll be discussing this with the moderators to determine if there needs to be any change to the forum guidelines as a result.
It's a shame a storm in a teacup arose out of this, but incidents like this help us refine the posting guidelines to help ensure we don't end up in a similar situation again.
Because the thread starter deleted his own post, so the rest of the thread made no sense whatsoever.
I'll respond to other comments when I have more time tomorrow morning.
Knowing the forum rules about businesses advertising etc I will probably get my fingers burnt now. The post was in the general section and therefore was open to interpretation. I believe it was blatant advertising that the mag was coming out soon. A simple notice to forum subscribers could have worked to let them know that the magazine was indeed "printed" and being distributed as we have had from Australian S&T. But the cover was included as a teaser to go and buy the mag. I know that issues have been vented before and certain actions taken because of that thread.
I am sorry but credibility for S&S has been somewhat diminished by their lack of performance over a long period of time, I myself will probably be black balled by them, but they have a lot to do rebuild that credibility with the Australian subscribers of the mag and to their advertisers as well. I myself am sick of the meaningless essay emails of dribble of excuses given every time there is a delay or a hiccup in their process. It is the same information regurgitated , we know that we have been told many times. I think our frustration has been pent up for a long time and that unfortunately for me I could laugh very hard at the art work that was posted as I could see the funny side of the send up. I think JDB and the other S&S authors and editors had better realise that frustration with excuses only goes so far and that being lampoooned is a normal traditional australian way of releasing these feelings. Thats why we can laugh at others and ourselves, because its the Australian thing to do, that and tall poppy syndrome!
So I support Ken and others who have a laugh at different situations, I myself don't mind at all, probably encourage it sometimes as I enjoy the humour of the sites “characters” sending me up or someone else. If I post it in the general section I expect this to happen, in the more serious sections, no generally off limits unless the thread initiator starts the ball rolling.
I support Mike et al in their wisdom and efforts to keep this site respectable and to enforce some adhereance to the rules and keep the forum on the level run.
But by JDB deleting the thread initial post also supports the theory that their credibility is shot to bits, I am sorry that he did this and could have made the results less of an issue through laughing with the rest of us and getting over the fact that they were lampooned that way. He/they have to realize that they are the brunt of many jokes on and off the site. I am sorry they suffer from head in the sand syndrome, oh it will all go away if I don't see it!! I don't think so! They should know that we do enjoy reading the mag when it eventually comes out, thats why we have been buying it for years and will still continue to buy it. But just face up and accept the fact that we have our opinions, and that individually we all add up, and to be to a growing and evolving astronomy community they need to be able to take solice in the fact that if you are being sent up then there was/is some respect in the first place. Imitation and comedy are a complement to the real thing, thats why we like comedy acts like the d-generation , cnnnn the chaser, the comedy company etc it reminds us of the genuine article and allows us to still appreciate it. Come on guys and gals! Support your local Magazine and thet them know that they are still loved and needed! If they want to survive they need us, just as much as we need them. it is a polutonic relationship, it just needs a little nurturing.
Wow!
Are you a bunch of grown men who share a similar interest in astronomy or are you a bunch of teenage school girls.
Isn't there more interesting or important topics to talk about.
Shame on you all.
Nice essay h0ughy (your longest yet!), most of it covers your feelings about S&S, so there's nothing for me to comment about there.
Regarding this bit:

I don't think it being in the general chat forum means that you don't need to seek permission to modify someone's artwork.
That's the only issue, as far as my actions were concerned. And I agree with this bit:

Ken's artwork is very funny and I've had many a laugh myself in the past.
If Jason had laughed about it and joined along in the joke, the thread wouldn't have been deleted. I know Ken meant no malice in his actions.

Yes Mike I feel strongly about this one, and i fully Support Ken .
I agree with you, Ken hasn't got a malicious bone in his body
I really beleive there should be a business advertising section, where the IIS site gets a small kickback from the businesses who would like top advertise in that section only, no one else can post there except them. maybe a lot of this might not have happened if that were up and running and that S&S should be able to take some flak, and laugh at it. maybe then we might get over a lot of the problems that has been raised in the past and move on, laughter can cure a lot of problems.
