I read this thread with interest. If I understand correctly, this is Drizzle stacking in essence - the optical system has a certain resolution, the CCD undersamples this resolution, so by moving the CCD slightly between exposures, the stacking process can take advantage of a higher (optical) resolution. For Drizzle, the subs were supposed to be progressively rotated for the maximum effect (field rotation does well here).
However, if I am in error, I would be pleased to have a correction.
