I really recommend on not doing this - it is cruel to the animal in question. I mean, people don't shoot birds with tranquilisers so they can be slow enough to take photos of. When dealing with nature photography, the best thing to do is to look but not touch.

Good set of images there Vars. It's always nice to see another macro photographer.

You know that one of the Bee. It seems to have the orangie clump around its leg. Is that the pollen sack or something. When I was a kid this Nun told us that bees have a little bucket on their leg to collect the honey and I spent all holidays trying to see a bee carrying a bucket. I didnt find one then. But have I now?
|
Claude - yes, it'll be the pollen sack. It's not an uncommon site. As an example:

Dragonflies have excellent eyesight - both on the main eyes, and their oceli (primitive eyes). The best way to approach them from my experience is to crawl on your belly, and slowly at that. Do not let your shadow fall on them. No noises. No sudden movements. Preferably upwind of them too. Some more information can be gleamed from my website:
http://www.macro-images.com/understanding4.html
Others may appreciate the info as well. troypiggo is very good at macro imaging as well, and will offer excellent advice if you ask him!

Was a crappy one to be honest - around 1.4 stops underexposed, had to rescue it quite badly, hence a lot of noise. Cleaning up the noise removed a lot of fine detail...pity, cos I did a good job of focus on the BIF (bee in flight). This is a native Australian bee, they're harmless, no stingers, very social, around 4-5mm long.

Time in the fridge is fine, (not the freezer), The fridge mimics a cold day for an insect and merely reduces the rate of chemical reactions and hence insect activity. Insects are heterothermic, ie "cold blooded" and utilize ambient temperature to regulate activity. Mark

Hey Vars, did you ever think about getting a paralellogram build for your astro-gear. Those things can lean right over your bed/chair. If you can't get to the gear, bring the gear to you!

I really must disagree. It is never morally, or professionally acceptable to interfere with your subject. Whether it's possible or not, doesn't make it a responsible thing to do. Ask John Shaw or Artie Morris what they think of it and they'll agree with me, as will many thousands of nature photographers.

I normally don't worry about threads being hijacked, but I ask you: is it appropriate in this case?

Well, the OP enjoys macro photography to some degree, someone mentioned putting insects etc in the fridge, and I'm simply saying that it's not morally acceptable etc. True, I've wandered off topic, but so have a bunch of others then if that's the case, and it's not uncommon for threads to morph too.
As a nature photographer, I feel quite strongly about inappropriately handling animals, etc. Part of the thrill of getting a good macro shot is learning how to stalk the insect/arachnid and not scare it off, whilst getting all the technical aspects of macro photography right too.

Dave any wandering off topic was an effort to keep Vars mind occupied on anything but his pain. This is not the thread to have a fight on.

Agree about the fight. My concern was exactly that the 'insect in fridge' discussion was starting to sound like a fight. I didn't object to the macro photos or the parellelogram but became concerned when I detect a negative tone.
Hey, Vars, we care so much we're having fights about the best way to look after you.
