Seeing how a lot of my favourites have already been mentioned, my vote is for the original Hitch Hikers series.

My fav Sci-Fi is star wars... Why you ask.
I always wondered if there are other beings out there and how advanced they are. I always want to travel in space and my scope allows me this (to a certain extent)

Wow some great ones already mentioned and a few I haven't seen.

So here's one no one has mentioned so far - "Silent Running" starring Bruce Dern. It has great music (imo) as a bonus

Equal first for me are:
1951 version of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' and '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
But my introduction to anything to do with space was 'Fireball XL5'.
Any one remember that? I still remember the theme song.

All the above were great too, but no one's mentioned 'Brazil'.
I remember that being pretty good.

I've thought about this all weekend and then went through my sci fi collection to see what I play the most.

1. "The Thing" by John Carpenter.

2. "Escape from New York" also by John Carpenter.

And for a good laugh "Big Trouble in Little China"

Cheers

jjj you are a woman of great taste..I have the whole lot, series 1-8. They are daggy but they make me laugh a lot. We used to sneak out of bed as kids to watch The Young Ones at 11pm on a Tuesday night (mum and dad were farmers and were well and truly asleep by then..I think..) on the ABC. LOL they're bloomin' hilarious.

For Sci Fi I have to give an honourable mention to "Back to the Future Triolog, Star Wars Collection and Star Trek flicks" but my favourite is:-
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind"

For Disaster Films I also give honourable mentions to "Twister, Independence Day and Titanic, but my favourite is "War of the Worlds"

g'day,

i reckon 'space odyssey 2001' gets my vote as long as you fast forward through the long psychedelic colour sequence towards the end (and maybe also the pan-am trip to the space station and the briefing in the space station). I've seen S.O. 2001, 6 or 7 times and always notice something new - like the 'high pitched sand falling' noise on the soundtrack when he's retrieving the dead astronaut. Love showing parts of it to high school kids for their reactions. The movie would have to be one of the "most referenced in other movies" too.
