Iddon, Canon EOS350D is good value and at 8.2Mp the highest resolution of the affordable bunch, but then I'm a Canon man, ask hoUghy and he'll tell you Pentax, others will recommend Nikon or Fuji. I suggest that you read as many reviews as you can find and then take some test shots at the camera store to analyse at home before making a decision.

At this point I have voted for my Pentax Optio because that's what I used In my first and only astrophotography attempt so far.
But I'll let the list the rest of the imaging devices I have access to.
In my camera stable we have the following (listed by age)
Nikonos II
Canon TLB 50mm F2.0
Canon AE1 50mm F1,4 & 55-220 zoom F4
Nikonos 5 orange body
Kodak CX6330
Pentax Optio MX

Not quite true Phil,
if the pentax is cheaper and you already had a pentax SLR then go with it because you can use your lenses on it. But if you are starting from scratch, then go with the Canon DSLR, there are more of them and more people have done nasty things to them to actually find out how they break, what they are capable of and not what to do!! Also when the current canon users want to upgrade you can get a bargin. A camera as driven by grandma to church on a sunday, hardly use no scratches not dropped in pristene condition. Ok well maybe not, I am sure you get the drift.

I saved my pennies, sold a few things and bought my pentax. i don't regret doing it either. I am sorry you haven't a chance to get a DSLR yet but who knows what the camera manufacturers will do next year, they might even come down to under $500

yeah maybe david!
might sell my daughter
I am sure she'd like that. saw a d-slr for $1k at the camera house... cant remember what it was tho. seems the prices are dropping pretty dramatically so we will all have one before long
i am getting a bonus at the end of the year (fingers crossed) an I could probably buy one with that... but I think i'll put the money elsewhere

Keep your pennys for a while ving. With the release of the Canon 20Da I expect we'll start to see a heap of second hand 300Ds and 350Ds becoming readily available soon.

You don't get much for kids nowadays, only an eyepiece or two. but for a really good camera you could sell your body to science experiments

I agree with Paul,
Canons and Nikons have proven their great astrophotgraphy & terestrial camera's..I would wait for great buy on a 350D....or save for another 3 years and get a 20DA...hehehe.
