I am fed up with people wanting to delete something just because they don't like it.
If you don't like it don't Read it, this is a free discussion page so leave it alone, it will die a natural death

I agree astroron. I found it a great read and don't think threads should be moderated for moderation sake. So the publishers of S & T changed their name so what! My missus changed her name when we got married and it didn't change who she was one little bit. I think we all need to remember one thing, to keep breathing. Everything else is gravy my friend, gravy.

I tell you what, Bisqueboy certainly made a spectacular entrance, even if it was from tripping down the stairs.

Oscar Wilde would have been envious.

Sorry, Bisqueboy, I'm just making light of this twisted & uncontrollable thread.

I am sure you meant no offense. Your responses have been quite civil and with some witty humour.

Welcome. And your initial observation brought some good responses.

Does he post here under a nom de plume, as I cannot seem to find his User Name?

Well if he does, he'd use something like Ball&batWagons or Hooeey.

I think his avatar would stand out though.

While this thread may cause strong discussion, it is still a valid topic, please keep spam out.

Like I commented previously: Most folks dont read. My first post commented on the change to Odyseus Publishing. The 'actual question' was the loss of Meade advertising in the current issue. 50 posts later, no comments?? Cause for concern I think.

Or maybe it's because:
a) Noone cares?
b) Most people can see your alternate agenda

which is why you got the comments you did.

The Answer My Friend is Blowing in the Wind...

Oh Bisqueboy,

So much much for standing by another fellow amateur... Where's your honour man!

As towards your persistent question...
- Maybe Meade didn't pay the bills?
- Maybe Meade didn't meet their editorial deadline?
- Maybe Meade has legal actions against some part of the advertisements?
- Maybe Meade have been taken over by the Hari Krishners, the Mormans, the Armish?
- Maybe they have turn the company from astronomy to astrology?
- Maybe its a deep conspiracy where Celestron contacted ASIO through Johnny Howard, who passed it on to George W Bush, then organised the CIA to infiltrated AS&T under the cover of night (with suitable red torch) and stole all the publicity materials of Meade?

Who really knows? Who really cares?

Iceman's is far too kind when he says "no one cares", which is because most of us are reading the important bits on astronomy and not the petty advertisements.
If you look at the AS&T Site, you will find a list of advertisers with Meade being still there. If there were some legal argument with Meade, they wouldn't be there would they?
As for expecting some reply from some spokesman from AS&T, you'll get none. The inner workings of any company is their business alone and nothing to do with you or me or anyone else. They can advertise who they want, when they want, and how often they want!
Clearly, from the long history of this thread, and for your own sake, either disclose who you are or just keep it to yourself! Unless you know something more than we do, just stirring the pot for a knee-jerk reaction is becoming rather tiresome.

Totally & &

Nyx.

If you are having some difficulty obtaining answers to your questions, have you considered the following?
  • Asking a question does not give you the right to have it answered.
  • You seem to have no history on this forum demonstrating a genuine interest in astronomy.
  • If you were operating a business and a complete stranger blew in asking what appear to be dubious questions, would you seriously provide answers given the above?
This community works by people giving and taking; assisting and being assisted. Maybe you should consider a more positive contribution to this community before carrying on with your current avenue of questioning? Might be more productive eh?

Cheers

Dennis

Exclamation Oh the Pain, the Pain... (Dr. Smith -"Lost in Space")

Congrats...

Finally busted the 2000th view of this thread.

Only 136 to go to break the "Global Warming...Science and Politics" of February 2007, and a further 1104 to go to break the "Fighting the Fight" thread from January 2007.

Do we have the energy?

This thread should have died at birth! (or kill it now) Poster is incognito! and Many agendae!! Mine included (previous difficulty with Mead ads and S&T)
I will now wait for next issue of S&T. Suggest the same to all. Again, I subscribe to both mags. Cheers, Neilzstar.

Hi Neilz

Ohh, if only life were that simple .

Flicking back through the posts in this “strange” thread, precisely both sentiments have been expressed:

“Delete this post” and “Don’t delete this post” by various community members.

I’m glad that I’m not on the site management team! Dammed if you do; dammed if you don’t. It’s a real shame that as a community, we even require moderation for our actions.

Cheers

Dennis

Apology

Without Prejudice.

Fellow Amateur Astronomers,

The posting of this statement on this forum does not confer a right to publish or distribute it elsewhere. It may not be published elsewhere without express permission.

Several days ago I made a post on this thread entitled "Australian Sky & Telescope Troubles?". I made that posting " Australian Sky & Telescope Troubles -- Humbug" on my own behalf. In that posting I clearly identified myself as the author. As the author, I take responsibility for that posting. The posting was not made on behalf of, at the behest of or at the suggestion of another.

The post was made with the intention of supporting the owners and editor of Australian Sky & Telescope in rebutting the suggestion that there were "troubles".

In that post I made several statements that were intended as positive affirmations of what I personally believe AS&T aspires to and attempts to fulfil.

It has been drawn to my attention that those statements are capable of an alternate construction which was not intended.

That alternate construction was to the effect that these statements implied an unfair criticism of a competitor or competitors to Australian Sky & Telescope. It was not my intention to imply a criticism, it was my intention to make a positive statement to in effect quash the suggestion "Australian Sky & Telescope Troubles?" To re-iterate, the post was made by me in an attempt to quash a rumour about an institution that I hold dear as an amateur astronomer of 36 years.

Given the above and upon reflection, my post was inappropriate.

I have accordingly removed the post from the forum by deleting it.

With the intention of averting the possibility of a "public slanging match" and to "make good" I retract those statements. I offer on my own behalf a sincere apology for the unintended implication that arises from that alternate construction as outlined. It is made to any and all competitor publications that sell, distribute or publish popular level science publications to Australian Sky & Telescope in Australia. For abundant clarity, that is to be taken to include (though it is not limited to) any and all persons and legal entities who produce Sky & Space magazine.

Lastly and without lessening the force of the above, in recognition of the fact that the post could be seen to injure the fabric of amateur astronomy, I also offer to you the readers of that post and to the community of amateur astronomers a sincere personal apology and hope that the speedy resolution of this issue is evidence of my bona-fides in the matter. I also offer that apology to Mike Salway the host of the forum.

The posting of the above material on this forum does not confer a right to publish or distribute it elsewhere. It may not be published elsewhere without express permission.

Yours Sincerely

Les Dalrymple

Greg,

I seemed to have missed Australian Sky & Telescope going to bimonthly.

What was the story there?
