Mike, I'd also like to do some moon photography with your laptop and my scope. Maybe we can work out a time around first or third quarter when the terminator is most interesting?? We wouldn't have to go to a dark site ....you could even come to my backyard??

One to think about.

Hi fellas,
Still unsure whether I can go to this exciting little star party - trying to convince the man to make a trip up north. If not this time around, then I hope to make it to the May 7th star party.
Looks like a good spot you have there Anthony. So nice of your manager to let us trample all over it
Clear skies,

Tah he said to me after i bought the scope on his credit card, you should see if there are other nerds to come and look into the sky with you. It would make me laugh seeing so many people staring into the sky....

He offered i accepted

Is your boss coming to the star party? He might by another scope for himself afterwards, if he does come.

When you live and work in Kulnura, you have no excuse not to be an astro-nerd.

I checked out the location today and took a few pics of two potential observing sites. I'll post them up tomorrow with the pros and cons of each of them, and I need the people that are coming to decide which they'd prefer to use.

One has a slightly less view of the sky, but is closer to amenities and conveniences (power, toilets, etc). The other has a bit better view of the sky but is further away from the amenities.

Mike,

The obstructed site may well be the better one for several reasons. If its obstructed, particularly to the south and east, this may help with skyglow. I have no problems using a partly obstructed area because I don't waste my time looking at things on the horizon anyway

If the obstructed site is only obstructed to within 30 degrees or thereabouts of the horizon is fine, also if there are gaps in the obstructions for the targets to move through will be fine. If it meets those sort of criteria it sounds good, particularly if it is the closer area to parking and amenities

Ok, so I went up to Kulnura yesterday to check out the site. From the Gosford exit on the freeway, allow about 30 minutes to get there.

It's further along George Downs Drive than you probably expect (about 10-15 minutes drive), and it's further along Springs Road than you expect (about 5 minutes drive). But there are signs to "The Paintball Place", so it's not too hard to find.

On George Downs Drive, there's a sign on the right to "The Paintball Place" which has a "turn right in 100m". That takes you onto Springs Road. The sign to turn left onto Greta Road isn't as prominent but can be seen, and the street itself is well signposted.

Ok so there's 2 potential fields where we can setup..

(images are heavily compressed to keep the size down)

Field 1:

Pros:
- Entry and parking is easy, enter in the 3rd gate along Greta road and you're right there
- Close to facilities and amenities, including toilets, power, seating
- Flat grassy ground

Cons:
- 30 degrees of horizon blocked due to trees, in most directions (also a good thing to block skyglow from sydney)

Field 2:

Pros:
- More view of the horizons

Cons:
- Further from the facilities and amenities
- A bit harder to drive to (through some bush)
- Ground bumpier (not as flat)

Like John said, I think field 1 is probably the best for saturday night. Most of the stuff we look at won't be on the horizon. And being close to the facilities is an advantage. But i'm easy, what are your thoughts?

There's some great BBQ facilities there too, so the May 7 party is looking very nice for another kulnura visit, if all goes to plan this weekend.

Thanks heaps to Anthony and his boss for allowing us to use the site.
