The current distributor for Celestron is about to be dropped by Celestron USA, last we spoke to the US side. The distributor Sheldon and Hammond are used to selling pots and pans that have really high margins, and don't understand the telescope market and thus refuse to lower their prices.

Hopefully the new distributor won't do the same thing. It's not good for the customers, and it's not good for the dealers who either have to charge a fortune for the brand, or mess around with grey imports and take flak from the local distributor.

About bloody time those crooks disappeared out of the telescope market.
Any chance one of the Aussie telescope importers took over? OR would there be a niche to import them?

From a discussion I had early last week in respect of a Celestron issue I get the impression that one of the larger importers may be about to announce they have taken on the distribution of Celestron products and this will see a large increase in the range of bits and pieces available at a much more reasonable price than we are used to.

I believe the current distributor no longer has a dedicated Celestron person employed as the previous incumbent left in the second half of 2015.

Still in talks, I think. I haven't checked in on them for awhile. Either way, I think it's a step in the right direction to move away from Sheldon and Hammond.
