Did it definitely come from inside the machine during shipping?. From the description and appearance it looks like a soft hot melt adhesive or PIB polymer. Was it on the packaging? I doubt it is a silicone as you need to cool it well below freezing for it to stiffen up. Anyone have an IR spectrometer?

Detergents take time to bond to the grease.

15 mins, then an hour, then overnight. Didn't touch it.
The scanner light source is LED. The drip trail goes back up to the ptr rollers near the top of the machine. You can see them in the picture.
No real chance it came from outside, the scanner has a door on the front that closes like a fridge. There is no goo on the outside of the door or the top of the scanner.
It is a 35mm movie film scanner, so no paper or anything enters the machine.

Yep, I have one and have offered to analyse the goo.

I could also get my hands on a portable Raman spectrometer if needed.

Cheers

Not an assumption actually, gleaned from the internet, so the figure may be dodgy, but it did come from a QLD government website

http://www.ehp.qld.gov.au/management...chemicals.html

PULP certainly has a fair amount of aromatics, you can smell them when you fill up.

This site says 22%...

http://discovery.kcpc.usyd.edu.au/9...._Unleaded.html

So what about my "assumption" is incorrect? Unleaded petrol in Australia, particularly PULP, contains a fair proportion of Xylenes.

I'll run a GCMS on the stuff in my fuel tank (Caltex 98) tomorrow if you want more proof.

Cheers
Stuart

This part.

What I do is assess fluid compositions and reservoir parameters on reservoir deliverability and volumes, plus their assocated effects on field development, environmental impact, costs and revenues.

Consequently, I tend to think about it everyday.

I'm probably one of the few who don't complain about petrol prices...

Good point, you're certainly one of the few people who think about it.

No, not a chance. The goo wasn't there when it went into storage.

Poita, Start a competition, charge a nominal fee for entrants.

Identify Poita's goop and how to remove it, win a prize.

Sorry, that's not helpful but it may raise a smile.

Cheers
