Well I can guarantee Newcastle's weather will be crap - I'm on holidays next week...
It's always perfect weather only when I'm at work, no joke.

Basically if I understand this right no one from tasmania through to way up past Brisbane will have a good view. That is the BOM view of things, though accuweather has Brissy being clear and sunny and Coffs Harbour being partly cloudy, Newcastle and Sydney is written off and as far out as Coona is shrouded in cloud - i am watching the predictions for Coffs and Brissy intently.

Coffs i can drive and take most gear, brissy is travelling light

Why couldnt this have happened a week or two ago
If you can get a flight to Kingaroy on Teusday,I can pick you up in the afternoon, and you can stay at my place and use gear here.Least your missus can't go crook at motel expenses.

Are IceInSpace Glasses I ordered safe for Venus Transit?

In the lead-up to the Venus transit I have read elsewhere that observing the Venus transit is much more dangerous to the eyes than observing an eclipse because of the much larger proportion of the sun showing, and that some 'eclipse glasses' may not be safe. With this in mind, can someone reassure me that the special eclipse glasses I bought recently from IceInSpace are still safe for the Venus transit event?

Cheers,
Geoff

I am sure they are safe to use with or without the moon in the way, they are intended for naked eye solar viewing. Remember a solar eclipse starts when the sun is full. My solar glasses from the solar eclipse in Ceduna still work perfectly fine, all black with an orange sun.

Hi Geoff

They're completely safe to use to view the Sun at any time - with or without a venus transit or eclipse.

They meet the required Australian standards.

I live in Wollongong but am travelling to either Tellegherry forest or mount Kaputar via Newcastle (camping gear is in Newcastle). Would the extra hours on the road for Mount Kaputar make a difference to my chances of having clear skies for the Venus transit or night sky?

Got my first telescope Thursday but haven't been able to use it once. Stupid air-water pollution!

According to the latest BOM prediction, there is a 40% chance of rain at
Mount Kaputar and the weather at Narrabri is described as a "possible early shower".

By comparison, at Coonamble, the current forecast is for a 5% chance of rain.

So it might be better to track west from Coonabarabran rather than go up
to Kaputar.

But check cloud coverage on the satellite before departing.

Here's the Skippysky transparency Map as of today...

It might give some clues on where to be. Hmmm, I might take the GS for a spin down to Lake Burrenjuck... no images but I'll get to see it and have a ride on twisty roads I haven't been on before...

Al.

PS. The bylong Valley Way between Bylong and Sandy Hollow might be an option for gambling type Novocastrians... if the eye of the needle is still there on Wednesday!
