I think this is my first post back in Nov 2008.
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...ad.php?t=37521
I had been observing for a while and was using an ASV loan scope. Took it to Vicsouth and had a great time, although I did get told of by Perry Vlahos for not using the atlas that came with the scope!

It's taken many years before I could do something about my interest, but I'm going out to a darkish sky location outside Melbourne Sunday night with a newly arrived pair of 20x80s (and tripod) to see what I can see! I'm graduating from a pair of 12x60s I've had for a few months which have been a revelation - the moons of Jupiter, seen only a mere 400 years after Galileo!
I'm hunting M31, the Jewel Box, M42 etc. Wish me luck!

Pleased to report that I have since found M32, the Jewel Box and M42!
How about when you became brave and posted your first thread! (OK, I know the extraverts amongst us started with a big bold brash thread!! I came in with a whimper.) Here is mine 19-12-2006, 12:10 PM :-

I'll keep looking over the next few months (and just may invest in a set of 30x bins ) as we approach opposition.
But, I'm confused ?? As I see Saturn through my bins (within an hour or two of rising) - should the rings be passing above the equator (South pole tilted towards Earth) or vice versa (rings passing below equator and North pole tilted towards Earth)?
By the way, what is the convention for posting photographs - It seems to me I've seen photos with North up and some with North down? Or am I just confused - the photos are taken before and after Saturn reaches the zenith?
Everything is so simple with terrestrial photos - up is up and down is down! Well, usually!!

I'm still confused But I did see that gap with 30x binoculars fairly well!

I found my first post. It was pretty boring. Just answering a beginners question.
One thing I didn't remember though was that I used forums very little then. I only posted about 6 times in the first year.

Go into advanced search.
Put your user name in.
List all posts but change the order to ascending order. The first one in the list is your first post.

The forum was a lot more relaxed then, like most of the "old timers" I was poached by an unscrupulous character called Iceman, who probably would have been better titled "black hole".
Mike managed to strip the "other forum" of it's entire membership in a very short period of time.

Yes Phil, all of us originals were poached from another Astro Forum.
But that other Forum was also a shambles
I went back in there a few weeks later after I joined here only to find that ALL previous posts had been deleted and they started the whole Forum from scratch again!
All the helpful tips, tricks, files, Images and helpful data was gone!
I think they spat the dummy not long after that and shut it all down anyway
It was run by an Astro Shop and I think they went out of business.

Speaking of other Forums, I notice that the other major Australian based Astro Forum has reached 58,615 members! Wow!

My first post was asking for opinions on buying a big Celestron SCT for my first scope. Everyone tried to put me off and recommended a Dob... but.... you guessed it... I didn't listen
