Interesting, never needed to test it, but I had always thought in a paypal dispute you didn't get your postage $$ back, just the cost of the item.

I should get my postage back, if he/she didn't post the item.

No tracking number provided, from paypal records, the seller indicated it was sent on 21 Dec via UPS

Tomorrow is the end of the 3 day "cooling off" period for me to cancel the claim. After that, it will be all in the hands of paypal.

No need to worry. You'll definitely get your money back. Paypal and online payments guru.

The only "bad" thing about the buyer protection is it can take up to 30 days to get your money back.

It's very easy for buyers to get their money back. Sellers, the ones that want to run a proper business, are the ones that have most of the risk. Any buyer can give them negative feedback, even if the fault is the buyer's.

Let us know how it goes.

That's by no means a fool proof way of avoiding dodgy sellers. It's becoming all too common lately that dodgy people get a hold of someone's 100+ feedback 100% account and flog off gear they don't have. Before Ebay/Paypal/the buyer knows what has happened, they've run off with a few hundred maybe a few thousand then off to the next target.

I nearly had this happen to me a few years ago. I don't know how it happened, I've always been very cautious and I'm by no means a novice when it comes to computers (it's been my hobby/job for more than 20 years) but someone somehow got my Ebay password. They didn't really do anything (just tried to purchase items using my account) but Ebay put a stop to it and notified me of the breach.

At the end of the day there's really no fool proof way to avoid dodgy sellers anywhere. You just have to hope there is a good system in place to catch these people out, and if you get stung, a system which will compensate you for your loss. Ebay/Paypal do this.

I have had 2 bad experiences.

First one was I bought the Beatles stereo remasters box set, which turned out to be fakes but got a full refund.

Second were Xbox hard drives which were never sent, so I lodged a complaint through PayPal to get my money back which is still going.

As one of the comments said below there are some criteria I go by when purchasing off eBay but sometimes you get unlucky.

- No less than 99.0% rating
- Enough positive feedback
- Try to stay within Australia
- If PayPal option is available make sure you pay through that. If you don't have a PayPal account I suggest you get one because it includes security of transactions as well as protection in case you get scammed.
- Make sure you read the description of the item
- If something is too cheap, such as between 1/2 and 1/4 of the RRP then highly likely its either a fake or dodgey

Have not had a problem with ebay or paypal.

I have also used Ali Express on many occasions

On one transaction I paid $732 plus bank fees of course and after a 2 week wait I eventually rang Aus post with the tracking number ...it was for a parcel sent some 2 months earlier for someone elsewhere...???

( with Ali Express the money is not given to the seller until the buyer flags he has recieved the item as advertised...it is kept in Escrow)

Anyhow, I lodged a complaint with Ali Express and after 1 month i got it all back...made a small profit to boot as the dollar had moved...and the sellers shop was booted off their web site.

I was worried but........

Paypal is very good at retrieving the funds - i bought a 5" map on CN from someone who had previous multiple good 5* feedback,
i paid after he checked post & told me to add what seems the correct amount, something turned up i bought at exact same time, i waited about 3-4 days then emailed seller, got no response
- waited 2 more days then lodged a paypal claim...when i lodged claim paypal told me the seller couldn't be contacted & i should upgrade to a dispute which i did.
i got a msg saying they would investigate, 5 days later they stated they had found in my favour & recovered the funds from his acc was taking place (it only took 3 days to get it back)
NB when i was sending funds i check in paypal if person is verified - i.e. there credit or acc had been checked by paypal
