Sounds a lot like a USB communications problem. I had similar only to find that it was related to RS232 to USB converters loosing their marbles for some reason and stopping the camera in it's tracks. Took a while to find, I had observatory rotation problems, Starry night problems, gemini interface problems and camera problems. Every time was a bit different from the last.

Will look into this and take all unnecessary usb peripherals out of the equation and see what causes this.
