Hi all,
Ron at Sirius Optics advised me today that apparently Iranian Hackers hacked the server web site last week and caused a lot of damage but ‘Dearsoft’ are sorting it out and should have the site up and running by now.

He asked me to post this to IIS on his behalf.

Why ? Thats idiotic. Mostly a bunch of teenage fools doing the equivalent of Graffiti and messing up hard work of good honest people to show their mates how clever they are.

I second that!

How could anyone think hacking is good, unless they are a hacker. It creates chaos and only benefits the hacker, no one else, at all! It is just another form of vandalism and should be totally condemned.

Think about what it has cost Sirius Optics, at what should be it's busiest time.

I just hope that remark was only made in jest.

The only way you get operating system security updates, virus definition signatures, IPS/IDS is through the sheer hard work of (ethical) hackers.

Without them, you're all stuffed.

There's a lot of misunderstanding of the definition of hackers here.

I found I had to Shift-Refresh my browser before I got the Sirius Optics site back from the AFL. All good now!

If it wasn't for Hackers and others trying to prove how smart they are, we wouldn't need virus updates, etc. So, I feel, your argument is a little flawed Hackers, at least those that are really smart, should put their energies into making the web better, not worse.

By virtue of being a human, we are curious. You can't take the curiosity out of a human.

Build something, and, someone will come along and try to work out how it was built. The same goes for computers.

Yes, absolutely true, I grant you. But, doing something malicious is another story, and yes, people will do this too. But to advocate that this is a good thing that should be applauded, particularly if it causes others problems, is rather misguided.

You could argue, that through this process, products (in this case, software) are manufactured to more stringent standards. It weeds out the weak and lets the strong survive.

My own webhost (and, thus, my web site) was down for most of this afternoon due to a denial of service attack. Which is really annoying, as I just sent a client their password for their wedding gallery and they were looking forward to seeing their images!

They do.

Discovery Channel had a show about it.
Many large Computer Program companies employ ex-Hackers to help write their software and use them as beta testers. The product doesn't go out if they can hack it.

I absolutely agree with you, however, when it affects others, as hackers absolutely intend, is just not something that should be applauded. That is all I am saying. I just don't think hackers should be seen as heroes.

Google "white hat hackers" and "black hat hackers". "Hacker" is a general term that encompasses those with good and bad intentions. To throw them all in the same bag is unfair. Some hackers should be seen as the criminals, while others should be seen as the good guys.

Can't think of a perfect analogy at the moment, but something like locksmiths. Some who know how to break into a safe or pick locks help you get into your home when you're locked out, or safe when you've lost the combinations, some work in security, while others might use their knowledge to break into safes and steal. To say that all locksmiths are thieves is not correct and not fair on the majority of them.
