I did however notice there are two bright stars missing from your shot near the galaxy, I am assuming something in your layering has blotted them out...see if you can spot'em

Yes I know the 2 you mean There is a bit of ringing and I'll do a repro but it'll take a bit as that was from early in the processing with deconvolution.

I like yours indeed, if you look at the larger JPG full screen I noticed some uneveness in the overall background colour on my monitor
As you said and I concur just a personal preference

Thanks Trevor. At one stage the image was slightly blotchy in the background, not sure if that is what you mean. Cheers.

I too on my monitor get fairly severe bright rings on some stars.
I cant critique realy as my images are nowhere near this quality yet and I would be happy with an image half as good. But if you clean up those rings it will be even better.
Louis had some nice steps in his tutorials on his site that dealt with removing these kind of halos
|
Thanks Chris. I'll be able to handle those rings but after the enter into the image using the noise tool reduces them but also the colour saturation as well. So I think a redo of the deconvolution blending step.

No repro yet. It wasn't me

I must say that I wonder how many ap devotees actually use a calibrated monitor. I was all over the place until spending some considerable $ to get this correct but then again colour is really a personal taste unless the photo is strictly calibrated (recommend a program such as eXcalibrator and Spyder3).
My 2c but love the subtleness shown in your image.

Thanks Allan.

Unless you are looking at a RAW or similar file and not a compressed image AND then you have a properly calibrated monitor then you must be joking.
I say bloody well done Greg and leave it as is mate.

Thanks for that. I am always striving for a perfect image and its a bit of a hard thing to achieve. So I don't mind reworking the steps where it went a bit wrong and getting it right.
Greg.

Wonderfully processed Greg (from my beginners point of view anyway).
I am beginning to learn now that the hardware side of things is beginning to look easier than the post processing. I enjoy a lot of your work Greg.

Thanks Darrin. Yes its true the post processing is a large percentage of the work but without good data from well setup hardware it is a lot harded or impossible.

Realistically though, this has got to be one of the best 1365s posted on IIS. It's interesting even with this much data and time we're all still making suggestions for perfection (and it seems to have been received well). Ever onwards and upwards in our expectations for the hobby (any chance for a "27 years comparison" on this one in 2038 at all!?). I think what appeals to me most is that it looks fairly "natural" with nothing pushed too far - which is actually damned hard to do after multiple interations of decon, sharpening, laying, etc of course. Allan makes an excellent point too that the hobby is already subjective enough without the variation most of us introduce with un-cal'd monitors (I've got 3 and I'm regularly shocked when I sometimes move something across onto another during processing and notice an issue previously missed )
Kudos too Greg for writing up in such detail what you did do, as galaxy processing is a steep learning curve for most of us. Even though I'm more of a Pixinsight guy, I really appreciated those insights
Hmmm, I'm getting all philosophical - time for some fresh air outside. Fingers crossed we might even get a chance for a (moonlit) astro fix tonight here in Bris...

I don't know if this is a reprocess but I like it! A very good NGC 1365 with a detailed natural look.
Cheers

Thanks Rob. Its been a tradition of this site to be very open about processing techniques. Ken Crawford, Louie have been very generous with their postings and many others have outlined in detail how to do things. I have learnt from these as well and it nice to be able to give back what you have received.

Thanks Steve. I haven't reprocessed it yet as I know it will take 3 or 4 hours! But I will do one with more attention to the stars and the background. Topaz labs is a good plug in but it can wreak havoc with your background if there are residual gradients which I mostly get with my CDK17 and my home site.
Thanks for the critiques they are all appreciated.
Greg.

Woohoo, got Anacortes Picture of the Day for this image (will be shown on 15th Dec).
Now to try to get a NASA APOD. They are very elusive.

Thanks Marc. I intend to add to this when the weather clears and the moon is gone. Another hour of red to balance it out and perhaps more exposure time. The multiple deconvolution technique brings out a lot of detail and is worth the effort on the right type of image.

Looks pretty darn good Greg!
I know you battle a bit with your seeing but there is some really nice detail showing up in the dust lanes and your background looks great.
Well done!
All the best

Thanks Rich. Seeing can be variable here. Occassionally its quite good though. Ken's techniques does help combat that. An AO unit would help too.
Greg.
