Can't argue with any of the choices so far ... but still a bit surprised that nobody's mentioned Kubrick's "2001 A Space Odyssey" or James Cameron's "Avatar".

Just to add to the list of all the previous Top 10ers, The Quiet Earth. Good luck finding it though. A Kiwi film from the 80's.

No particular order:

Forbidden Planet
The Time Machine
War of the Worlds
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Blade Runner
Alien and Aliens
Terminator 1 to 3
Pitch Black
Serenity

And best ever TV series ... Fringe.

Regards, Rob

All of the above.
But there is a few I need to watch again.
We got the big sound system and the bluray so been buying them from Amazon.

Avatar - even without 3D it has some amazing visuals. I like whole imaginary cultures with different precepts of what beleivable.
StarTrek, The Movie - Yeah ! Go the Spocks !!
Blade Runner - my wife always fall asleep and misses about 20% of it ... Good action and story.
The Fifth Element - future reality ? a sad view of the future.
Waiting for Terminator to be released as a Bluray set ( Dec I think ) Just got to be so funny when during the third movie Arnie takes the mickey out his own previous incarnations )
Serenity - haven't seen it in years ! but finally got the bluray and it got loaned to a friend before I had a chance. Just got it back, now to find some time.
Sunshine - some awesome work in cgi and concept. A bit suspect in the story basis and reality. Chucking ALL of earths nuclear material at the sun to restart it ..?
Moon : a clone and his successor, interesting.

Heaps more, good escape reality watching. But who knows, fact can be stranger than fiction.

I watched "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" again recently

surprising although made in 1964 when we still had little data on Mars it was quite well made, the tech was a mix of then and tommorow

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058530/

a typical case of survival in a harsh enviroment, a man isolated fighting his sanity and how we need companionship to survive etc

Blade Runner, especially the scene where the android, Rutger Hauer ?, is dying and talks of what he has seen and his "emotions" concerning thoise sights. I think this is one of the great scenes of all movies. And the film is based on one of Phillip K Dick's books - my favourite author.

Soylent Green, also some special scenes. When the old guy gets put down and they play the Pastoral. I also liked how they scooped up the protesters with the tractor buckets and put em in big hoppers (seems like a good idea to me - pity about uman rites)

Wink overload

I made the mistake of reading the thread before posting my list. Now I`m lost in space (and no, the recent movie was not a favourite). So I:m going to take my time and compile an uber-list on my Quickflix account, and work my way through the ones I haven`t seen, likely revisit some I have.
For now though, in no particular order, I would have to include those that most affected me as a young bloke:

Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Many episodes of `The Outer Limits`
Red Planet
2001 A Space Odyssey (an in any case I`m a big Kubrick fan)
The Thing
Alien
Bladerunner (and the Vangelis sountrack is superb)
Moon
Starship Troopers

and what might be quasi-science fiction:
1984 (John Hurt); Brazil

More if judged by how low we are allowed to lower our brows.

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun!
Tom

Way too many to choose from but I agree with all the choices so far.

I would have to say that "Contact" would have to rank pretty high up for me though.

Have to agree with a lot of these, although for the Star Wars/Terminator/Matrix series its the first movie of each that stands out for me. Particularly the wonderful atmosphere in The Matrix - that stands up to many repeated viewings. Several of these I have heard of but haven't seen yet, will look out for them

I was very impressed with these:

Sphere - very creepy with a nail-biting finish
Twelve Monkeys - one of Terry Gilliams best I reckon
Altered States

Does 'The Time Travellers Wife' count? Intriguing idea and a beautiful story.

How about Metropolis? I still haven't seen that but its meant to be fascinating.

John

Hi,

You've really got to cull them hard, only the very VERY best left:

Forbidden Planet (seminal ideas)
2001 (yes, you CAN survive a vacuum, for about 10 sec)
Star Wars (only one, we don't need more)
Metropolis (seminal)
Alien (just the first one, the rest are only pale epilogues)
Blade Runner, maybe (only maybe, it has Indiana Jones in it)

Cheers

Some funny Sci-fis:

Mars Attacks!
Morons From Outer Space - especially the sneeze scene - Hahaha!!
Ice Pirates.

Kevin Kostner's efforts were both enjoyable:

Waterworld.
The Postman.

AND . . . . . . . Mad Max (the original)

Great lists

Thats some list I've got to watch or revisit

But there is one more for that list,

Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Took the wife to see Event Horizon and freaked her something terrible.
on more than scene even me on a couple.
She still hasn't forgiven me for that one.

Nico
