If your going to start a thread by praising Bruford you won't get too many arguments from me. Back in 'the day' the other drummer talked about in that genre was Carl Palmer, one of the most technically competent drummers ever and completely at home out of 4/4. Bruford aged better but sadly has announced his retirement from touring. A drummer who's aged particularly well is Ginger Baker. He was great but has gotten better with age.
One drummer I really like these days is Liam Genockey from Steeleye Span. Naturally in that band there isn't much call for fireworks but the first time I saw Liam a mate described him as 'poetry in motion'. These days I find I'm appreciating musicians not so much for how good they sound as for how good they make those around them sound and the rhythm section of that band set up the vocal/violin lead beautifully.
No praising of drummers would be complete without mentioning Chick Webb. Was he the most influential drummer ever? If not, it was Gene Kruper who learned a lot from Webb but reached more ears.
BTW bass players only need 4 strings! Especially if you have your Thunderchief.

A drummer walks into a shop and asks for a pie with sauce.
The shopkeeper replies "You must be a drummer mate"
The drummer replies "I am, how did you know that?"
The Shopkeeper replies "This is a fish & chip shop"
Told to me by my mate who is a drummer.

Daniel, yep, Virgil's a machine.
Grant, Blow by Blow is one of my all time favourite driving albums. Freeway Jam. Diamond Dust. omg, that album is full of classics.
Dan, you might like this, too...
Kai Hahto (of Wintersun) is king: http://youtu.be/3CZYhO7vZlo
That's just him warming up.
Indulging in some jazz: http://youtu.be/K3naB-LGhmQ
Uplifting and epic melodic heaven: http://youtu.be/lc4WFzl-6Xs
The double-bass is like a machine gun going nuts.
And, one last one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHoY51VCluI
0:22 -- watch both of his thighs. Good grief!
1:08 -- watch his left hand. Blast beat insanity!
Kai can play anything.

The late James (the Reverend) Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold fame, I've not heard a better drummer. Sadly, Jimmy died (or committed suicide according to some theories) in late 2009.
Jimmy was not only a talented drummer but a pianist and wrote many of the songs that A7X perform.

Couldn't resist
I played bass in a Qld band called 'Country Boys' at the opening of the original Gateway bridge.
Premier Jo came on stage to make his speech, but first congratulated "these 4 wonderful musicians ....and their drummer!
As a drum stick whizzed past Jo's head, Chookie ( the drummer) called out: "Drummers are f****n muso's too you know".
Still makes me laugh!

What inside Joh had….you know the old joke…What do you call people who hang around musicians?…
Best drummers, too many, but here is my additions.
All Jazz drummers…Al Foster, Paul Motion, Mel Lewis, Peter Erskine….I could go on and on….

I have a list.
Keith Moon for energy and fun.
Ginger Baker for stamina in a person so thin he could be mistaken for a drum stick.
Bill Bruford and Alan White for their work with YES
Others. too.
But when I first heard Terry Bozzio with Frank Zappa's band I new I had found my man. He has incredibly talented feet.
Part 1 of the Guitar Centre Drum-off with Jimmy Johnson on bass and Alex Machacek on guitar.
He picks it up a bit about 5.20.

From the Zappa period. Perhaps not the best example but it's not hard to find others.
