I love this thread, it's hilarious!

It seems that they purposely didn't ask an ASTRONOMER, as opposed to a "UFO expert" what it may have been.

The media always knows what it's doing.

It's called ratings.

Saw the video, at a particular time of the video noticed the object move proportional to the moving of the video camera. I would say that is a reflection on the lens possibly Venus.

Nice comments

Just looking at the video again, at the 2:33 minute mark the camera pans back and it looks like they are definitely looking into the east dawn sky.
Venus.

I try to avoid telling people one of my hobbies is astronomy, its just too painful
having to put up with these questions-I no longer do field nights any more either-once again-just all the painful questions.

A lot steam from such T,V reports in the O.P.why do these T.V stations put such rubbish on air,its because the average public see this type of reports or similar, that they soon have views on space and astronomy matters that they truly believe.

Its a great shame this T.V network could not give the same time and coverage to 'Bird Strike',or a small interview at 'Quarks' place. There are so many gifted and talented people on this forum that have made many types of observations, images etc that are quite a scientific significance, but no coverage.

The general public would'nt have a clue how much time and effort it takes to get something right.

'Sunrise', 'The Morning Show' etc, are just electronic versions of 'Who Weekly'. Sadly society these days, or it seems the great majority of it, are just interested in hearing every little detail of every little celebrity's life, and the moron's who make up our great unwashed want their bit of fame and media spotlight too.

Cheers,
Jason.

.

Many people ask questions at social gatherings so that they can talk about themselves. Next time someone asks about your interests, ask them if they own a telescope...

If we could just introduce them to Stellarium...

Illusion of movement obviously caused by cloud movement. I'm not sure, but I think I saw a gibbous phase when the camera finally focused while zoomed... I'll have to download the clip and go frame by frame.

OIC!

You just have to watch the movie idiocracy to see why and where we are heading. The great unwashed are taking over, the comment about half the population is below average intelligence is fine but what if the average is falling?

One of the many reasons i unplugged my TV at the wall 8 months ago.

Love movies and i buy some select TV series (NO brainwashing ads...)

TV just rots your brain. Opiate for the masses.

People's live would be significantly different if they could do without TV, they might even develop intelligent hobbies (yes even outside of astronomy).

I've done the same Frank.
When I moved into this house, it was a conscious decision not to connect the tv.
Like you I'll buy select tv series to watch.

I also don't watch free to air TV, doco's on Foxtel yes, but no standard TV programs designed for fringe dwellers.

yeah right
And every thing you see on TV is true too.
I feel exactly the same way jjj. Most days I get motivated and will fight them, but there are some other days I just sigh, shake my head and walk off -- I just don't have the energy to fight them all the time. To adapt a quote by someone who was very wise -- "The most abundant element in the Universe isn't 'Hydrogen', it's 'stupid' ".

The lack of capacity in the general population to apply a bit of logic, to seek independent empirical evidence and to think critically astounds me sometimes -- in fact most times. Given this particular story it must have been a very slow news day. So, why not ask an astronomer what it was? Someone, like, familiar with the night sky? Of course that would "ruin" the story.

The "UFO" phenomenon is just one manifestation of it -- albeit a particularly high profile one.

Best,

Les D

I did this about 7 yrs ago, only I went one step further & uprooted it & threw it on the front lawn. We have a TV where I am these days, but I only use it to watch the odd movie with.
