It is frustrating trying to figure out what's for real or not, but the best way to approach this, or anything else in science, is to have an open mind but still be critical of what's being said until they have sufficient evidence to back up their claims...or at least a reasonably sound explanation of what's happening. It doesn't have to be the maxim "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"...I've never liked nor subscribed to that nonsense and it's rather hypocritical of scientists to run that by anyone else, considering that 90% of their own "facts" would fall by the wayside if they applied it to their own study areas. All it requires is for there to be the evidence that, within reasonable doubt, points to the veracity of the processes occurring/observations that are made.
