Definitions are arbitrary.

As far as I'm concerned there are 7 planets in our solar system. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Uranus, Neptune and PLUTO.

Would I be wrong to affirm this by venturing that many times in scientific past, correct science has been repeatedly squashed by what is popular at the time?

I really don't care what you call it. Planet, not a planet. It's still there isn't it?

Maybe they will get all P.C and call it a protoplanetary underachiever...

Solar system junk DNA?

Outer system patroller?

I think I'll run with don't know .

Mr & Mrs google tell me only 5 % of the worlds professional astronomers got to vote on the issue.. which touches on another comment already made .. is science about a vote ?

Should the models used be applied equally over the whole system?
The outer "stuff" sure dosn't have a one size for all fit, but , change
the rules by another "vote" , couldn't we possibbly have hundreds of planets .

Yes, you are correct.

Pluto is not a planet either. Neither is Charon, or Ceres. Thinking of it as a large asteroid allows us to correctly contemplate what else might be in that orbit.

Now for the statistical part that CraigS was worried aboutthe numbers have been fed into the 1970's style supercomputer that now sits on all our desks and here are the results.

29.79% of respondants are Romantics at heart and pine for Pluto's lost status

65.96% of respondants are practical scientific based individuals who are happy to strip poor Pluto of his birthright breaking the hearts of kids and kids at heart all over the Universe.

And last but not least

4.26% of respondants are easy going stressfree individuals who take it as it comes don't care too much but just enough to contribute and understand that this is just a fun break from looking at the constant cloud cover and crying in there beer.

All being said between us all we are one well balanced community that together make up one sane and reasonable individual.

New figures just in late breaking NEWS surge in support for PLUTO

31.25% for Pluto

64.58% against

and 4.17% in the unsure column

Last edited by supernova1965; 19-12-2010 at 07:28 AM. Reason: new data figures just got better for PLUTO

All..... 'Planet' is a category, part of a system of classification. There are no 'rules', no-one is changing the rules, it is not a scientific theory or hypothesis or law - just a category for general use. And yes, it can be voted on - ie a general agreement from those were available and took the time to vote to agree on the form that the CURRENT classification will take.

Cheers

Whilst not a planet under current definitions, I give it honorary status just out of childhood sentimentality.
After all

WELL
I have always been a fan of Pluto so as far as im concerned it will always be a planet to me
I dont care what the scientists say they have been wrong with many things before
Just wait when the New Horizons arrives near Pluto there will be some new awsome and amazing discoveries and they will all be in love with Pluto all over again (yep i have a warped imagination sometimes)

This has been my fav pic on my desktop for a long time now i love it
