So you see, it isn't that obvious after all

It is a sad state of affairs the ignorance of the general public on their knowledge of just basic science all over the world. How many star parties have I attended, and the cluiest people are the youngest ones, the ones with the "doppiest" questions are the adults.

I'm sure Potolemy is sticking his finger up at us now!

Half the audience? Yep, I'm game to say that's about right. Saddly.

I mean, how many aussie inventions have gone overseas for development because WE were too doppie?

I heard a 100 year old man say just recently being asked if he held hope for the world? His reply-

"I have all hope in the world. I just hold no hope in humans."

Cute Star Trek picture- should be an emoticon! Love it!

He could have been right if he had said Mars and the show was in August.

Mars was as big as the Moon then so it was probably orbiting Earth as well.

Cheers

Bill Engvall

A little off topic (though not by much) ...

Any time I hear a discussion about Stupid People, I just crack up laughing...

One of my favorite comedians... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Engvall

and his song on Stupid People http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5ZkdHImCuQ&feature=fvw

And that's why I'm a misanthropist.

Everyone who reads this thread should try it on a few people, I bet you will be amazed just how many don't know, aren't sure or at least hesitate

How did you phrase it to them? Orbits or Rotates?

If you ever read about "facepalm" on the Internets, that image is what it refers to.

Both, I wanted to make it very clear what the question was.

Yeah, yeah, good giggle and all that, but I would take issue with the title of this thread. Namely, I wish people would distinguish between ignorance and stupidity. Just because some people are poorly educated doesn't mean that they are ineducable. Sure, people should shoulder some responsibility for not having enough interest in life and the wider universe to "FGI" sometimes, but you can't blame individuals completely if they happen to be born into a society that fails to foster native curiosity.

Go ahead. Beat me.
