OK Davo. Enjoy the Video.

Here are 2 pics to explain the 2 worm drives! That brass gear was hand-made by Roger Davis!

I nominate ken's eq mount and asimov's toucam as the best pieces of equipment most loved/used by their owners.

I can not wait for the tracking to start and the planet images and dso's to begin.

What will ken's daily post average of 13.14 shoot up to when he is smacking those planet pics up faster than server can handle!!!

Haha! I'll be too busy imaging to post!!!! :

Bert and I just spoke on the phone about a lifting/locking mechanism for the engaging/disengaging of the main worm. I have been racking my brain for several hours when Bert just suggested a cam method! Excellent!!

Off I go now to make that.

Cam, Davo! As in 'eccentric circle'. Like the ones that open the valves in a car engine. This one will lift the drive, thus disengaging it.

Sounds simple, now I just gotta make one!

Think of a circle with the centre off-set! That's eccentric. Like the orbit of the planets and comets.

Looking really good Ken. I am still amazed how quickly and carefully you put it all together. I don't think gloss black goes with lemon and teal (whatever that is).
When you have it all running will come down and take some (many?) pics with the 5DH. You see this was my (Baldricks) cunning plan all along.

Again a very nice bit of ingenuity and fine engineering with the simplest of home tools.

Come on over then!

2 1/2 hours and the engage/disengage is made and fitted! Here is a pic of it. It is a stainless steel paper roller out of a printer! MORE SHINY BITS!!!! (I just bent it to the required shape).
The top is domed to make it move nicely and it locks in place because it goes past 90 degrees. I have mounted a tension spring on the opposite side to prevent the worm from lifting.

Yep Bert, with centralised load bearing fulcrum and neoprene digit protection anti-slip sleeve in the optimal purchase location.

UPDATE! UPDATE! READ ALL ABOUT IT! MAN STUFFS UP MOUNT!

Yep! Yours truly made a Major Blunder! Just goes to show that every measurement should be checked 3 times, not just twice.

After spending 2 1/2 days getting everything perfect (haha) I started to assemble the whole mount to double check before I strip it all down for painting.

AAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The telescope cradle housing and RA adjuster smashes into the Motor Drive!!!!

Time for drastic action! Out comes the angle grinder (that doesn't sound good) and hack, grind, chop, hacksaw, grind more, grind some more. Re-measure . . .damn!

Hacksaw more, grind more, chop, grind, file.

I had to shorten the length of the whole drive unit by about 30mm which meant re-cutting everything including the worm shaft (gulp!), re-drilling and re-tapping half the holes, cutting the frame and steel box, cutting in half the bearing and support bracket, and grinding out extra bits so the worm didn't hit the end of this new shorter version bearing support.

But the good news is. . . it all fits now and the scope cradle and other bits clear it by 4mm!!!!

Time to relax now and know that tomorrow I only have to drill and tap 2 more holes and it is all finished. The right way this time.

This description reads very short and simple for what took me the last few hours of hard work including panic, sweat and more cut fingers
