"I think you have had some pretty good advice from all sides. The thing about good
quality premium ep's is you will always keep them, if they're good : ) and they will
perform across a range of scopes. Yes you could spend a lil less for something that
will work just as well in a long FL scope but what happens down the line and you
change to a fast FL... you want to go out and buy ep's again? just something
to consider"

I agree with this comment a great deal.

While I can not comment on a SCT (all I've got are reflectors), I tend to lean towards having fewer higher quality pieces of gear than lots of "stuff"...

I have and enjoy a: 24 mm Pan, 16 mm T5 (I really like it a lot), 11 mm T6, and a very fine 7 mm Pentax XW...while some might disagree, I am very happy with these choices and depending on your interests and scope would gladly recommend each and everyone of them...

One of the best bits of advice I have ever heard is "try before you buy"...get out and look through several eyepieces through your gear if possible before you jump into the deep end and spend lots of money...

Good Luck!

Thanks again for everyone's assistance. Am very confident now that the choices I make will be sound. I can definately see the benefit of high quality gear, both for now and future use. Have pretty much decided on a Pentax XW14 and a Panoptic 22mm, though I'm sure any of the other eyepieces mentioned on here would work a treat also.

Not bad considering at the start of the thread I was looking to buy just "one" quality eyepiece! Seriously, very happy to spend the extra money on something of quality that's going to last. Will let you know how they perform on my scope, in case anyone else with a similar scope has a similar enquiry at any time in the future.

All the best to everyone for the New Year!

Glen

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

I'll have the second eyepiece if you only want to keep the one.

Obviously you aren't happy with the 15mm GSO superview you had at SPSP? Not great at F5 IMO !!

Haven't used the S5000 Meade 16mm SWA but I have used the S5000 Meade 14mm UWA and I can tell you that its not a real good performer at all in an F5 scope especially considering its $350 plus !!! price tag. I am told that the 14mm is not up to the other focal length S5000 UWA's.

Something else to consider are the Orion Stratus series. You could go for either the 13mm or the 17mm. These offer a 65 deg AFOV and 20mm of eye-relief. They can be ordered through Bintel or direct from USA and will cost you about the same as the meade S5000 SWA (about $260). The Orion Stratus are clones of the high grade Vixen LVW's.

Here is a link to a good review on them.

I know that Steve (Janoskis) recently sold his 13mm nagler T6 and kept the 13mm Orion Stratus. Send him a PM and ask him his thoughts on the Stratus. My guess is that these will outperform the Meade S5000 SWA.

PS- Did you ever get that Jupiter applet I sent you working ?
G'day John,

Likewise it is great to see you on this form. I still have fond memories of spending some time with you playing with the Argo Navis on your Dob at the SPSP.

Thanks for your comments on the Stratus (and the excellent link). I noticed your post the day after I purchased the s5000! This was based on some research I did and my conversations with young Michael at Bintel. I must admit I didn't come across much on the Stratus before your note.

I got to spend about 10 mins with it last night before it clouded up. Seeing was poor but a quick comparison with the GSO 15mm showed how poor the GSO really is! The s5000 gave me a great view of M42.

On the subject of the Jupiter program you gave me. Yes, I got it working under the virtual PC on the Mac. It is simple but effective.

Thanks again and all the best for 2006.

Regards

Glenn D

Thanks Rodstar for your concern But you already have the Pan 22mm! And the Pentax is close to your Nagler 13mm. Hmmm, maybe if you were more needy I'd think about it , but I'll keep them for myself for the time being

Just wondering about the EPs that you get when buying a Dob from Bintel/Andrews, would they keep me interested for awhile (12 months or so) before I started yearning for something of more quality? Being only a beginner I am quite happy to keep learning the sky without spending too much $$$.

The eyepieces supplied with these scope's should tie you over just fine, Also when you buy one of these Dob's try and 'haggle' for better eyepieces if you can.
