There are lots of consumer items that are popular and people love to use but just because a newer version of something is released doesn't make it very newsworthy. I think it is called "advertising".
Articles on Fbook or Twit ter can also be called "advertising"

Hi All,
I just ...
... can't get excited by a phone, sorry. Any phone. Call me a luddite if you will (and I know you will).
Actually, I've been thinking about replacing my six year-old Nokia lately, mainly because the "8" key won't work most of the time. It is my second mobile phone in fourteen years. When not in use, it sits in my pocket and no-one can see whether it is stylish or not.
I use it to ... make phone calls.
Best,
Les D

I used to use my phone just to make calls too, then I needed a new phone when the old one went car surfing(left it on the roof).
Actually, I went about 4 or 6 months without a mobile at all after that, until I was told by work that, as a manager, I MUST get one.(plenty of emphasis on that, I got the hint)
Now I check IceInSpace in my lunch break, check if I've been outbid on ebay, do my banking, check my emails, make music, listen to music, check the weather forecast, leave myself written notes and voice memo's, use the scientific calculator(for work), check where the cheapest petrol is, read a free e-book.... all from my pocket.
And yes I do all of those things regularly.
I've even had customers email me schematic diagrams in PDF format so I can get all the electronic components ready for them to pick up. Saves them time and saves me rushing around in the store while they are standing there waiting.
I don't NEED to do those things, but it's sure nice

Simon,
These things have been mentioned in pretty much every iPhone thread that's come up. I've stopped explaining myself. : )

So I guess people will now carry around an IPod, Iphone and Ipad?
Apple could show real innovation and make one device that can replace the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Maybe even make the phone dockable with the pad, so the pad can have some features of the phone, like a camera, LED flashlight and motion sensing etc.

Duc, the iPhone already has the iPod in it.
The iPad with 3G is realy an iPad+iPhone+iPod

Yes, all iPhones and iPads include an iPod app (and a nice one at that). However, the iPad doesn't have a phone app (like the iPhone), only VoIP calls are possible, AFAICT.
Hence, it's down to iPhone vs iPad vs both
Cheers
Steffen.

Simon,
it has 3G as an option but that's for data, not for voice. Out of the box you can't make phone calls with an iPad. I'm sure some VoIP apps will fill that void and enable "sort of phone" functionality on the iPad.
Cheers
Steffen.

Nice pice of gear. My contract has run out so perfect timing as my old iphone has copped a hammering.
Quick Q, is anyone concerned with the wifi/bluetooth etc antenna being exposed and you physically touch it with your fingers when the phone is being used. My understanding (plus all the warnings on my previous phones re not to touch the antenna) is that the antenna radiation pattern is altered if you touch the antenna and that can cause the phone to go to max output power (2W in this case)
Any one worried about getting your head fried off?
Cheers
Mike

Ah ok, that makes sense.
I thought it would look a tad odd to hold an iPad up to ones ear!
Tho I thought maybe it worked with a Bluetooth headset.
No phone option... Bit of a bummer.

I have used my iPhone so much the home key doesn't work everytime ,sometimes have to hit the key a few times to get it to work and the case is cracked and pieces are ready to fall out. I went to Telstra today to look at the 3GS thinking I might buy one out right @ $799 (US price $99) for the 16gb version. Asked about the 4G and was told the price is expected to be $1300+ for the 16gb version (US price $299) might be worthwhile mailordering one from the states.

Those US prices include a phone plan, so are not comparable to outright purchase.

LOL my home button didn't work everytime either, but thats 'coz I spilled bourbon and coke on it the first day I got it, probably didn't help much
Works fine now.
Arent the US prices linked to 2year AT&T plans?
EDIT: Erp... Stuart posted while I was single-finger typing(and eating)

Teach me to read the fine print. Yes AT&T contract required. But still a huge price difference.

Not that big - they're paying $100/month aren't they? Over 24 months that's $2400 + the $299!

Wow, thats a Hellstra-style contract.
When I was shopping around for the 3GS the plans were much the same, 'till I found one with the 'magic number', about half the price... $1416 over the 24 months. ($49plan +$10phone)

Les, you're my hero. They are just phones, but wow, are they popular ... at least on Melbourne trains. I was reading a book next to a lady with one and she kept lifting it up and flicking it.... damned distracting. I eventually had to see if she was okay (a seizure perhaps...?) and realised she was using some sort of fishing app. Hey, if $800 plus contracts lets you fish on a train... more power to you
