I'm a beginner so I don't know anything also

My logic is with Brendan, looking at known objects makes more sense to me than finding something that you dont know what it is and then losing it in the couple of minutes it took looking at a map to work out what it was that you found but then lost.

hi Redfox, i'm new hear myself. Before I purchased my Celestron 6SE I read and asked questions (just like you) and finally made up my decision.
I preferably wanted a scope to view the planets and also with a device like the GOTO which would assist me and my young family (so the little ones don't get bored) in viewing some objects in a short period of time.
Yes at my local astronomy club, majority have Dobsonians.
Give it time I'll get a Dob aswell. At the meantime just shop around and ask questions. Whatever you choose, go with your gut instinct and you'll enjoy it.
