Hmmm....

What a storm in a teacup eh? I thought the made-up covers were a real hoot. Certainly didn't think it was done in a malicious way, just a bit of fun.

As for the mag. I reckon it is first class - a really well put together publication. I look forward to my next copy with eager anticipation, as do most of the posters here I think. Did someone from the mag. complain, or wuz it just one of those moral police types with a bee in their bonnet?

Stuff the humour then!

I will just be Mr. Boring Serious (when I can be bothered posting any more). That should make the dull folk happy.

Why don't you change the title of this area to 'General Restricted Chat'.

I did not recieve any emails or PM's from either the Administrators or Moderators voicing any concern about the posts! But then again, that might be innapropriate!!!

Don't worry about it mate.

take comfort in the fact enough people saw what happened and formed a fairly similar opinion.

I didn't know the chat page was for advertising,if it had been put in the buy sell and trade forum it probably would not have been touched

It is a delicate balance re forum, I would guess, between a wild west type arrangement on one side and a homogenised white bread version with a halo on the other hand
Rochler, we love nothing better a good old fashioned storm in a tea cup around here
and as Robert Maxwell or was it Rupert Murdoch said? "todays news is tomorrows fish and chip wrapper"

Sky and Space

Jeez, I feel like I missed out on all the fun having read the thread but not the source of the thread.
My contribution, as I look to my left I see my book shelf filled to the brim with Astronomy mags dating back to...well lets say say long time ago. I have bought every copy of every mag S&S have released going back to...well I am holding a copy of October 1994 in my hands at the moment which covered the comet impact on Jupiter. I will continue to do so because I believe in supporting local content. Having said that I have also read every story their editor has written explaining the missing editions over the years and why that won't happen again. I visited my regular Newsagent several times recently and still no S&S...
AWOL?
I wouldn't have thought S&S would be brave enough to challenge a little fun, even criticism every now and then.

I saw you work Ken & I thought it was a good laugh too ......
Don't let the long arm of Censorship get you down ... we all know you meant well.
I know how you feel though, sometimes important (to me) articles I submit to the local Media are not published, other times they are edited, changing their original meaning.....thems the breaks !
keep on posting ......

Ken, l think the fact that you never got a direct complaint from an Ice In Space member says it all, seems the rank and file thought it was ok, if some people cannot see the difference between a little humour and a malicious act then that is sad, some people obviously take themselves way to seriously.

Hey, the thread was deleted but my post was directed to JD. Why was the entire thread removed. I wanted JD to know that I was cool with and looking forward to this issue. Did he get this message? In other words not all the posts were "offending". They should have been left in place.

Anyway, I guess if he reads this, he will know.

The trouble with these things, it only takes 1 person to complain and it is ruined for the majority. That's why my posts have dwindled to a fine trickle. We neeed a fun and rip off section that doesn't allow members who comlpain access, that way people with a sense of humour and an adult view on life don't have to put up with the bull**** of the few members who have a stick up their arses.

That's a very true and amusing observation cahullian.

In the cold light of day, having allowed some time to pass since this debate flared, I remain of the same opinions I expressed yesterday.

but added to this, is the nagging doubt as to exactly whose interests were being protected and served?

And I think someone made the very valid point that a democratic community such as this is more than capable of being self-moderating.

If someone's got a complaint I think it's only fair and respectful they make that complaint open and in the public domain if they truly believe it to be a fair and valid complaint, rather than just maybe grinding their own axe behind closed doors?

Having said that, I will repeat the point I've also made before that moderators are an essential aspect of sites such as these. There are a myriad of ways that we can run into trouble... in these highy litigious days.

I just think we need to be a little more "moderate" and a little less reactionary.

I don't think you can place a high enough value on having good, well-informed and educated individuals acting in this capacity.

I think this has been a bit of a lesson ... for all of us

FWIW the word "democracy" keeps popping up. The reality is the site isn't a democracy.

Decisions affecting the site are not put to a vote. This site is only here because Mike took it upon himself to get it up and running. While it's everyone who becomes a member of the site that keeps it active, informative and fun to visit, its Mike that will cop the flake if someone does take offence at views being posted and doesn't deal with them. I assure you that in the short time that I've had the real pleasure of knowing Mike, I believe that no action has been taken against any post or thread that I've been aware of wasn't done with genuine concern for the long term benefit of the site. And I don't believe any post is removed without considerable thought going into the consequences of that post. From my own experience there can be a very fine line in should I/ shouldn't I edit/delete a post. I for one would much rather err on the side of conservativeness.

I would hate to see anything untoward (letigiously speaking) happen to the site or anyone that uses the site. I can appreciate it that members get upset when post/threads are editted/deleted but please walk a mile in Mikes shoes before getting upset.

At the risk of being pelted with virtual rotten tomatoes, let me explain a couple of things. Moderators have to protect the interests of all forum members, and the site itself.

The whole issue is about respect for other people and their work. Some months ago, a forum member posted a dso pic of a planetary nebula, and another member thought it was cute to post a photoshop created picture of the same dso in the same thread.
This photoshop picture got deleted by moderators for the reason that it was inappropriate to take the mickey out of somebody else hard work. It was demeaning to the creator of that dso pic.

The magazine cover is representative of somebodies hard work, and the fact that its from a commercial enterprise doesnt make it any different in that plagerising and editing their work for a laugh might still be offensive to the author of that work. In fact that appears to be the case as the author deleted his original cover pic after seeing what others had done with it.

Regardless of the humour value of the edited versions, how would you feel if it was your pride and joy that was defaced and held to public ridicule in your own thread?

As for the point re advertising, there needs to be discussion as to what exactly is allowable as some do push the limits and maybe some strict guidelines need to be put in place.

snip .
No rotten tomatoes from me. Just a big thank you to Mike, the Moderators and the entire Ice In Space community for making this site the place to be on those cloudy nights.

Cheers
