I keep the caps on the eye end of the eyepieces because the lid closes on them and there is a slight chance that something could come loose and scratch them. The inner end is (a) buried in the foam and (b) recessed into the eyepiece tube. I keep the spare caps in one of the larger holes, closed off with a plug of the foam I cut out originally to make the hole, just in case I might need them.
