Terry where I used to work we put in a dam in the last 10 years .. and I'm sure there was a fair bit of drama with a relevant govt dept .. think it went along the lines of your removing x of megalitres from the catchment by placeing a dam here so we want some money please .

Two concrete tanks, capacity = 78,000 litres, three quarters full which is pretty good for this time of the year!
Looks after two oldies, one grand daughter, two horses, two cats, a rat(!), a small garden and lots of bird baths!

Cheers
Chris

I did hear something late last year, that some councils were thinking of charging people for the water they collect, can't remember which councils though or even the state, and haven't heard any more about it. I don't think it would be a vote catcher!

I reckon that's why they offer the govt discount to install a water tank in residential area housing. You need to register to claim the cash back then they know you've got one. When the charges will come (in the near future) they'll already have the mailing list.

Somehow, I wouldn't be surprised.

Hi Folks,

There is indeed a small fee paid for dam capacity in NSW. We live ~30 km from Canberra and have 2 dams ~3.5 ML combined total capacity (not that they're full of course). We pay $60 per year to the NSW Office of Water.

Hi Bruce, no one from the council or Office of Water has ever contacted us about our dam.

Does it have anything to do with capacity? Our dam would be pushing to reach half a mega litre in my estimation.

Hi Ric,

It possibly stems from the previous owner establishing lots of olive trees and an irrigation license. I just assumed everyone with a dam had the same arrangement. Apparently not.

I think so Bruce, I had a quick read on the Office of Water website and there are different categories for irrigation of livestock and crops.

There is also a section about harvestable rights which is a free entitlement.

I only had a quick look but I think I'm safe, I hate to get hit with a back payment bill for the last 12 years.

Cheers

Hi All,
A friend of mine owns a property in the Philipines. It has a below ground concrete tank. About 25,000 Ltr. At the end of the last dry season they discovered a 1.9M crocodile in it. I wasn't told how they got it out but very carefully no doubt,

Cheers Marty

I thought the rules were that if you did not stop the stream by diverting any overflow out of the original watercourse you were safe.

Ok folks, try this: 121 000 L. That is out total years supply and we have not bought any top up since building this place 6 years ago.

No rates and a good feeling. Yearly rainfall is about 680mm.
